Beautiful views, great kitchen, peaceful
As promised, the river views were spectacular, the kitchen was well equipped - three different types of coffee makers (yes!), array of spices (bonus for the cook!) and spacious. The house has been renovated and was very clean. We had a wonderful time exploring Taneytown, Gettysburg, Thurmont, and the environs. Beautiful country - corn fields, rolling hills... Farm stands with fresh produce, yum! As noted in previous reviews, the house is on a very steep hill - and the stairs- especially the ones going down from the road/parking to the house are treacherous, very narrow, uneven, - you need to be very careful carrying luggage, coolers, etc. The river itself is not swimmable, there is a lot of mud, and little to no gravel bars. We went to Cunningham State Park and swam there. Canoeing and fishing seem to be the right activities. This is one of about 10 plus houses that are on the Monocacy River, they were built originally sometime in the 1940s. While this and one other house have been renovated - many others have not been, and are of varying stages of upkeep. Some of the areas are filled with old furniture, stoves, trash etc. There are a lot of private property signs up, so we felt uncomfortable walking our dog as we weren't sure if we were trespassing. But overall, it was a wonderful experience - we spent a lot of time on the deck overlooking the water, very peaceful.
