Flying to Hawaii usually means landing at Honolulu International Airport, which is the state's main hub for commercial Hawaii flights. Once you arrive there you can take boats or planes to other islands on Hawaiian Airlines, Mokulele Airlines and a new regional airline called Go! Other Hawaiian airports are found in Hilo, Kahului, Kona, Lihue and Molokai. The Wiki-Wiki Express is a free shuttle for visitors at Honolulu International Airport. The Main Overseas Terminal has a visitor booth that can provide plenty of information on transportation from the airport to your destination.

Hawaii Weather

Hawaii has a tropical climate with warm weather most of the year. Honolulu, like most of the state, has steady temperatures that stay within a consistent range throughout the year between 66 and 89 degrees. Some of the islands have windy days, but the overall climate is mild, even during tropical rain. Rarely do people experience freezing weather in the state, although the mountainous islands do get snow in the winter. Travelers on Hawaii flights are urged to use skin protection since sunburns are frequent.

Getting Around Hawaii

There are eight islands that make up the state of Hawaii, with the most populated one bearing the name Hawaii, which is nicknamed by locals "The Big Island." It also covers the most area. The next biggest island is Maui, which is covered with rain forests and attracts many tourists. Oahu is the most commercial of the islands and is usually where tourism begins, as most visitors fly into Honolulu and visit the beaches of Waikiki. The less populated islands include Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe. Several other small islands surround these main islands. Oahu is the only island with federal highways, although all the main islands have highways and bus systems. The Hawaii Super Ferry is a ship that can transport automobiles and trucks from Oahu to Maui and Kauai. The Expeditions Maui-Lanai Ferry provides a similar service between Maui and Lanai. Visitors can take cruise ships to sail to the other islands through Norwegian Cruise Lines and Princess Cruises. You can get to almost anywhere you want on the islands by bus, in which more information can be found at The Bus.org.

Hawaii Attractions

The islands attract tourists from around the world on flights to Hawaii who admire the natural beauty of the beaches, wilderness, mountains, cliffs and trails. Honolulu and Waikiki are popular destinations for mainstream travelers who enjoy nightclubs and malls. Maui is appreciated more for its natural scenery and whale watching. Some of Hawaii's best attractions include:

  • Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, the national historic Naval Base that marked the United States' entry into World War II
  • Waikiki Beach on Oahu, where you'll enjoy gorgeous coastlines and palm trees
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano
  • Diamond Head State Monument also known as Leahi in Oahu, a crater park with hiking trails
  • Molokini, a small U-shaped island that attracts scuba divers
