Located on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena, Colombia, is one of the first Spanish colonies in the Americas, and there is quite a bit of colonial architecture to see in the city. Cartagena is home to two distinct areas that are of interest to most visitors. These include Bocagrande, with its long stretch of beachfront, and the walled city that contains the Cartagena's historical sites, exclusive restaurants and nightlife.
Most travelers will find themselves arriving in Cartagena via the Rafael Nuñez International Airport (CTG) that has regular flights from the U.S. and Panama. If you are traveling over land, the bus station is located about a mile and a half east of the old city. It is also possible to charter a boat in Panama and sail into the harbor. It is easy to get around the old city on foot, and local buses run to destinations in other parts of the area. For those that do not wish to walk, taxis are easily found throughout the city.
If you are visiting Cartagena on vacation, it is best to plan out the timing of your trip in advance. The city is a popular destination for Colombians, and it tends to get busier during Holy Week at Easter and over the summer vacation season.
