    About this property

Lovely Private Deluxe Suite Near Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor On MDI

Adults-only bed & breakfast in Southwest Harbor with spa tub
The Deluxe Suite at Treetop-Retreat near Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island. Quick Overview of my Treetop-Retreat Suite: Located on a private wooded road, one minute from Long Pond and central to the splendor of Acadia National Park, Treetop Retreat is only two minutes from the town-center of Southwest Harbor, or 25 minutes from downtown Bar Harbor, making it readily accessible to all the Island’s delightful restaurants and shops, yet still on the “Quietside” for a perfect retreat experience on your vacation. Treetop is a quiet retreat for adults only, therefore there are to be no children under 18, and one has to be at least 21 to book the Retreat. The lodgings are not suitable for pets, nor are guests to smoke anywhere on the premises, since there are many that are allergic to pets and smoke. Treetop-Retreat has two lodging choices. Though this listing is for the deluxe Suite, there is also a separate listing for the Apartment, if you are in need of kitchen facilities. Each lodging has: a private entrance; an intimate, private second story deck off the bedroom looking out onto the surrounding wooded area; a comfy queen bed with heavenly soft microfiber sheets; relaxing love seat; entertaining Apple TV; tub/shower with Jacuzzi; a basket of toiletry items is made available should you happen to have left something at home; plenty of fresh towels provided for your personal care, as well as towels that can be used for outdoor activities; homemade blueberry muffins at your arrival; a refrigerator with orange juice and half-and-half; microwave; coffee maker with the choice of decaf, or regular medium or dark roast, or an electric percolator for black or herbal tea; and of course, air conditioning and heat. The deluxe Suite has some special touches such as: a roomy private deck off of the bedroom surrounded by wonderful trees and an 11’ diameter umbrella with LED lights, so that the deck can be used no matter what the weather, location of the sun, or time of day. It also has two separate bathroom areas, one with a sink and its Jacuzzi being in a larger garden-type tub, so you can spend some time relaxing your muscles from your outdoor activities. The other bathroom area has another sink, a bidet, and a toilet. To help provide a relaxing experience the leather love seat in the suite has a recliner on each side; and the wall hung, flat screen Apple TV can be pivoted toward the bed or the love seat. Then after you are rested up from exploring the exciting adventures of Acadia, there is a large information rack to entice you into planning further Island exploits and escapades. In addition to your private deck you have access to the large deck in the front of the property tucked into the woods, which has a fire pit and fire box with all that is needed for relaxing by the fire in the evening. There is also a large 6 burner gas grill with a side burner, and outdoor patio dining furniture. Additionally, the patio dining furniture can be screened in, should the mosquitos be a challenge (a Thermacell is also available, should you prefer). If you desire to steam your own lobsters, crabs, clams, or mussels, the proper equipment is available so that you can do that right on this deck, where you can then enjoy your Downeast feast on the outdoor patio dinette. Guest access You will have your own parking space just off the blacktop and past the main entry door to the house, so that you can come and go as you please, as well as have easy access to the private entrance to the outside stairs around the corner of the house, which lead up to the private deck outside your bedroom in complete privacy. There is also plenty of storage for you to enjoy, including the full utilization of a 6' closet in the bedroom, as well as a chest of drawers, a full bureau with drawers, and two high, back-saving luggage racks, should you prefer to use them. Neighborhood My home is located just "down the street" from Long Pond, the largest lake in the National Park, in a quiet, wooded, dead-end road with about 15 households, the majority of whom are full-time residents of Southwest Harbor. Most of the homes are a Cape-Cod style residence, with a couple two-story colonials like ours. We all value the quietude for which you are looking, and which Acadia imparts to those who make their pilgrimage to visit or live here. From the moment you make the turn off of Freeman Ridge Road onto Ridge Acres Lane, you will be enticed by a glimpse of the allure of the sea that surrounds our Island, as you gaze upon the masts of a sailboat or two moored in Somes Sound's Valley Cove off in the distance. Without a doubt, you will know that you are going to experience a marvelous adventure, whether a quiet one of healing as you drive around the Park Loop or sit as you soak in its majestically abundant panoramas, or thrill to boating upon the ocean or lakes, or explore its many miles of trails and carriage paths. No matter where you end up staying, welcome to the powerful, ancient charm and attraction of Acadia. Hi, I’m Nola your host My joy in life is my family, my husband, and two adult children and their wonderful spouses. I did my graduate degree in developmental psychology and have had the privilege of my work career being focused in the field of special education. I enjoy traveling, especially to various lake regions and the coast together with our family. In terms of books, shows, and movies, I especially enjoy spy and espionage themes, as well as movies and series that are period pieces or those that highlight local cultures of a Celtic variety. As your host, I want guests to feel that their comfort and relaxation are important to me during their stay. It is a joy for me to serve them, and I want to do all that I can to make their stay memorable. Specifically, that means I would like to provide a scrupulously clean place, one that is quiet and private in a woodsy retreat-like setting that promotes rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. You can expect me to be as available or unavailable as you desire. My motto as a host is to treat my guests as I would like to be treated. Please look at last year’s reviews to see how our guests feel about Treetop-Retreat and the care that was given. Getting around Other than car, we do have a well-developed free public bus system here on the Island. Thanks to a generous grant from L. L. Bean, it is possible to explore virtually the entire National Park without your car. The closest stop for us here is Clark Point Road, off to the left in the center of Southwest Harbor, on the edge of the post office parking lot. You can take your bike if you would like, since they have bike racks on the bus. You can also take your bike with you on the mail boats, which go out of Southwest Harbor, or Northeast Harbor to explore Little Cranberry (Islesford), Great Cranberry, or Sutton islands. Additionally, you can catch the Swans Island Ferry in Bass Harbor to explore Swans Island either by bike or car. There is a bike rental shop right in the center of Southwest Harbor, as well as in Bar Harbor. Some of the Family’s Suggestions of Where to Eat on the “Quietside” of the Island: • The Seafood Ketch: This is a wonderful little restaurant right on Bass Harbor, having water views. The food is very good and it is quite popular with the locals with lobster rolls, scallops, and seafood in general being the crowd pleasers. • Sips: Also open for breakfast if you happen to be on the quietside of the Island, Sips is a popular local spot that offers a pleasant atmosphere, and consistently well prepared meals. They are especially known for their crepes, meatloaf, and risottos, as well as a nice selection of American dishes. • Café Drydock and Inn: Though having mixed reviews, we have had a couple of guests that have really enjoyed their dinners there. • Joey's Place and Sports Bar: This is the only place I know of in the state of Maine that has an actual, authentic Philadelphia Cheesesteak! Most places in Maine have a "Steak & Cheese," which lets me know I was already up for a disappointment. It's no wonder that Joey has this authentic tasty treat, since he is from Camden, NJ just across the river from Philadelphia. He also has this wonderfully confident, Puerto Rican bravado that is worth the price of admission. He and his partner Clara can also whip up some of the best wings on the Island. • Thurston's Wharf: is one of the best places on the Island to enjoy lobster "in the rough", and they are definitely among the freshest to be found. They have a beautiful, yellow-awning deck that extends into Bass Harbor, where you can enjoy lobsters that have been taken directly off the fishing boats that day, since Thurston's is also a lobster pound that about a third of the hundred strong Bass Harbor fishing fleet uses to sell their lobsters. Lobster is lobster, the taste will be great no matter where you go on the Island (if you like them!), but the view here is the one our family enjoyed the most when wanting to eat with a water view. • Quietside Café and Ice Cream Shop: Known especially for desserts: cookies, ice cream, and Francis' wonderful homemade pies! • Eat-a-Pita and Café 2: This is the place to go to get sandwiches to go. Lots of choices, including wraps with avocado, and other delights. Their menu is on-line so you can phone in your order, and it will be ready to go, when you get there. • Red Sky (gourmet):

Lovely retreat on the quiet side

So glad we found the Treetop Retreat - it is just that. Nola and Wayne were lovely and very accommodating. We found the suite very comfortable and well appointed - down to chilled water waiting in the refrigerator and, of course, Nola's homemade blueberry muffins which were delicious! The overview of the island, maps, guide books and recommendations on what to do, where to go and where to eat were invaluable and helped us make the most of our time on Mt. Desert Island. So nice to have so much research and first-hand knowledge upon our arrival - it saved us so much time getting acclimated. We would definitely recommend staying here to friends a family visiting the area.

      5/5 Excellent

This was a great location on the "quietside" and would definitely stay again on a future visit to MDI and Acadia. Thank you Nola.

            5/5 Excellent

***** I'm adding my own stars because this experience deserves ten! From start to finish Nola and Wayne made this vacation stay one of the best ever. Communication was excellent and check in was seamless. Wayne was there upon arrival and was so nice in not only showing the efficiency and what was provided, but also gave a lot of helpful information regarding the park, places to eat and things to do. The efficiency suite was immaculate and very comfortably laid out. All the little touches and extra items that Nola and Wayne provided were really quite thoughtful. And last, but not least, the blueberry muffins... sigh... they were fabulous! Nola, Wayne, thank you for everything and for making a great vacation even better!! :) Dorrie
