    About this property

Elegant Historic House Close to Blue Hill Village and Barncastle

    Vacation home in Blue Hill
Have you ever stayed at a wonderful old B&B or country inn and wished you & your family could have it all to yourselves? Now you can! We're pleased to offer historic Parker House in Blue Hill for the 2020 summer season. Enjoying a cup of tea while sitting on a sofa in the parlor with its gilt-framed portraits, pianoforte, Chinese wallpaper and Persian carpet & looking out a pair of French doors onto a columned portico, you may feel like a character in a Jane Austen novel - although Sarah Orne Jewett might be closer to the mark. ('Downton Abbey' is stretching it a bit, but the comparison has been made). We also have some of the same china used in Netflix's 'The Crown' which we make available to guests. The house boasts an immaculate, sunny kitchen with painted bead-board, gleaming subway tile and lots of windows. The south-facing space was designed and stocked with cooks and coffee lovers in mind: ample work areas include a farmhouse sink and separate prep sink, making group meal preparation a pleasure. We've been delighted by positive feedback from friends and families who have enjoyed cooking meals here. With interest growing in organic and local food, we're happy to inform you that Blue Hill is home to a first-rate Co-op, now in a location within walking distance from Parker House, and to growers selling fresh produce either onsite or at a weekly farmer's market at the local fairgrounds. (Our guests enjoy complimentary Co-op membership with a discount card attached to the key chain). Blue Hill has banned single-use plastic shopping bags. We have reusable bags available for your convenience. The kitchen opens onto a forty-foot space composed of two of the house's original downstairs rooms: the former kitchen, now the dining area with its massive fireplace & beehive oven, original iron fittings and antique pewter on the mantel, and a living area with a large Hearthstone wood stove for gatherings on chilly August or September evenings. (All bedrooms have working fireplaces but the one in the dining room is currently decorative only). Through a short passage next to the dining room fireplace is the Morning Room. A book-filled chamber with sofa bed, comfortable chairs and its own dining or study table, it’s perfect for sunlit breakfasts. With a half bath and direct access to the South Porch dining area the Morning Room is essentially a self-contained suite, ideal for the early birds in the family. The front hall leads to our formal front parlor and up to the bedroom floor. All three upstairs bedrooms, like the Morning Room, are large enough to serve as bed-sits - great for those who want privacy - but convivial early risers will appreciate the separate east-facing sitting area from which the sun's rays can be seen hitting the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia, the first place they touch the east coast. (We hope the tantalizing glimpse inspires you to drive over to take a closer look). The parlor closet contains a variety of sporting equipment including a badminton or volleyball net and new this year a telescope with smart phone attachment and Bluetooth remote shutter. On clear nights the stars can be spectacular in our part of Maine. We're thrilled with all the new life summer tenants have breathed into Parker House, which began its third century in 2012. Blue Hill is a great town in a part of Maine justly famous for its natural beauty and cultural & recreational opportunities and, if we do say so ourselves, our house is kind of a landmark (it's on a well-traveled road) and we look forward to proudly sharing it with more people who either already know Blue Hill or are experiencing the area for the first time. Don't wait, book.

I would say if you are considering staying in the Blue Hill area, look no further. The location is perfect for exploring Acadia and the surrounding area, with several large towns within easy reach. The location is quiet yet close enough to local stores to be very convenient. I found this ideal. The kitchen is modern, fully equipped and styled perfectly in keeping with the character of the house. And the rest of the house? Wow. Each room has its own character and is furnished and decorated with great attention to detail. I had an amazing holiday and the owner was very friendly and extremely helpful. As a visitor from the UK the property met all my expectations of a genuine New England home.

We loved staying at the historic Parker House. A touch of history with the most modern amenities

We had a wonderful experience staying at the historical Parker House in beautiful Blue Hill. The home is like a portal to a simpler place and time but the owner has made sure all the most modern amenities are available. There is WiFi availability, streaming videos, and an antique turntable with blue tooth capabilities. Our family did our beat to “unplug” during the vacation and found the large assortment of books and board games a much better way to spend our time being a family. There is a wonderful telescope available for star gazing which we enjoyed during the Perceid meteor shower. A wonderful “home base” for day trips, If was fun to explore places like Deer Isle, Bar Harbor and Blue hill and still return “home” at night. The owner was also wonderful in answering all questions in a very timely manner. We hope to be able to return in the near future.

Living well surrounded by history in Blue Hill

Staying here was a near perfect experience. More than spacious and comfortable the home’s decor is enhanced by the old furnishings and it’s historic qualities. It’s unique ambiance transformed our time there into something other worldly. We thoroughly enjoyed our week. During our stay we enjoyed the feeling of being completely ourselves yet in someone else’s space. A few practical remarks; The road the house sits on can be quite active in the morning but in the evening quiets down. The property to the back is large and private - though shared with the occasional flock of wild turkeys passing by or deer couples grazing on the berry canes. The kitchen is newer and well equipped. There are dishes, flat ware and glassware in abundance however it is all shabby chic and mismatched. I counted 26 martini glasses, I only found 3 red wine glasses and two odd white wine glasses. The two baths are well appointed however both are upstairs with no facilities on the first floor. Our stay was memorable. The home owner is thoughtful and friendly in a way that made us feel our presence was welcome and appreciated. Staying in this home was a very good choice for us.

Spacious house in a wonderful location!

the Parker House Inn is a stately old home filled with interesting antiques and art work. The kitchen was filled with everything we needed and everything was top notch. There was a comfortable living area and multiple fireplaces that added warmth and beauty. The owner John Bates was incredibly helpful when I had questions and always responded within a short time . He had multiple suggestions about sightseeing in the area and I truly felt I could ask him anything and he would go out of his way to help us. The town of Blue Hill was charming and we explored other areas nearby. Deer isle, Stonington and Brooklin to name just a few. Anyone visiting should make a trip to the Penabscot Narrows Bridge and observatory which connects Verona Island to Prospect. As well as Fort Knox in the same location. .

Great stay in a beautiful 1800’s home

This was our first trip to Maine and loved our stay. The house was big enough to accommodate my extended family and had everything my family needed. It was conveniently located for us to go on our day trips to explore coastal Maine. John responded very quickly to any questions I had about the area before and during our stay.
