    About this property

"your Maine Retreat" is a Unique, one of a Kind Experience

Beachfront vacation home in Stockton Springs with kitchen
Your Maine Retreat can be your Maine Retreat - it is a unique three story, 1.5 bath home that sleeps 6. It is constructed of large wooden beams from old factories, local timber, and recycled fixtures providing a comfortable, rustic, cabin-like feel to the home. You will enjoy being away from it all, yet have many amenities near for your convenience. One of the unique interior decor focal points for the downstairs is a large polished tree in the center of the home, with two birches at opposite ends of the support beams. The upstairs has a sitting room with television (no cable), a full bath, and two bedrooms (one with a queen bed, the other sleeps four; one bunkbed (full on the bottom, a twin on top) and one twin. Heading north, you are only five minutes from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge/Observatory and Historic Fort Knox, located on the Penobscot River. Across the river from the Fort is the small town of Bucksport, with its river front walk and small stores (including a Hanover groceries). Further north you will find Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor (45 minutes away), a "must" place to visit and spend at least a full day. Heading south, only 5 mintues minutes away is the town of Stockton Springs. Where, on Cape Jellison, you can explore Fort Point State Park, with its light house. Another five minutes, to the south, in the quaint town of Searsport is the Penobscot Maritime Museum. Heading south, 10 more minutes, you find yourself in the town of Belfast, with its authentic New England feel, vibrant waterfront, a historic downtown, great eateries, and many local artisan shops. Further south beyond Belfast, is Camden, where the mountains meet the bay. You will enjoy the quiet and solitude, yet not be far from the many activities the region offers. There is the opportunity for pleasant walks along the Penobscot River, right out the driveway and across the street, in Sandy Point State Park. Near-by you can find great kayaking, inspirational hikes, challenging cycling, educational museums, lots of great shopping, and many places for exploration. Or, you may decide to just go nowhere and relax in the quite. Good bird watching is available right on the property and at numerous other locations, including Sears Island, a few miles to the south. You may even be lucky and have a rare moose sighting. You never know what you may see. It is our goal to make your stay relaxing and comfortable, creating an enjoyable and peaceful environment. Rustic but very, very clean and great location!

We chose this property to be near friends who were also renting on the same road. it is on a quiet road, very convenient to Route 1, but just across from the beach (no view). It is a beautiful drive to Acadia and other wonderful spots on the coast. Not luxurious, but whimsical, comfortable, and very, very clean.

        Mosquito farm! Bring Repellent!

We love Maine, we visit almost every year. This is the worst place we have ever rented. We made it work and had a great time but it was a challenge. The house is unfinished; it’s a rough cabin. The trees inside are a beautiful part of the decor. But it is a challenge to enjoy the decor when the basics don’t work well. It was a small step above camping - we were out of the elements, had bathroom facilities and beds. If you want to cook, don’t stay here. If you don’t want to bathe in repellent, don’t stay here. The kitchen is not equipped to accommodate cooking; so many things wrong with the kitchen - the stove is awkwardly positioned and difficult to use, all the utensils are a hodgepodge of useless, old dirty tools, no vent fan, wood everywhere absorbing water and rotting ( unsanitary). We had to buy a can opener because the one in the house was completely rusted! The shower is like the kitchen; no water pressure, no light ( we rigged a light so we could see), there is rotting wood in the shower too; so even after bathing we didn’t feel clean. There is no WiFi and phone service is spotty, so you need to know everything about the area, including distances and closing times of restaurants , etc. , no washer/dryer so pack a lot of clothes unless you want to spend your vacation at a laundromat, and the beds are uncomfortable. However, there is an over abundance of mosquitos! Bring multiple cans of repellent. Don’t open the door without being fully coated with bug spray. Once we got out of the neighborhood we didn’t experience many mosquitos.

        5/5 Excellent

          Charming cabin in the woods

This house is a charming and rustic yet well appointed cabin. We saw some beautiful fall colors and are looking forward to returning to the area. The house has no wifi, so if you're looking for connectivity you won't find it here. Cell service is good.

Convenient to French’s Point for weddings

It was a very convenient place to stay for a wedding at French’s Point. A few little tweaks would make it better. There is a light switch to go up the stairs at the bottom, but when you get to the top, there is no switch to turn that light off. The stairs are not designed properly, the risers are of very uneven heights. But our biggest disappointment was that there was no WiFi. As I looked back at the property description, it needs changing. The first part where it lists the amenities, it says internet. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, underneath the availability calendar , it says no WiFi. I guess I never scrolled down that far, since I had already read that there was internet listed in the top part. Since there is really no cell service and no land line, we were happy to discover a public interest phone across the street at the parking lot for the beach, in case of emergencies.

              Not Quite What We Expected

Our Maine Retreat is for sure a unique property, located in a lovely spot near a state beach area. My family and I were not prepared by the description in VBRO, though, for the fact that the cabin is a work in progress, not a completed vacation home. There are lots of unfinished areas in the house and that was not mentioned in the listing. I would have preferred that information up front before deciding to book, and it may not have changed my mind about staying there, just my expectations. The sleeping arrangements are a bit awkward. There is only one double bed, and it is topped with a very low bunkbed, so low in fact that my husband and I had no real option but to sleep in separate beds, not something we would have chosen for a time meant for togetherness. The steps leading upstairs are quite steep, and though our family managed them fine, I would not recommend for anyone with balance or strength issues or for families with small children. Those things said, if you go in realizing that this home is clearly a product of enthusiastic DIYers and is still in the process of being completed, it is a pleasant place for a retreat. The kitchen is well equipped, there are some very interesting architectural features, lots of effort has gone into using reclaimed/ recycled material, and the area around the home is pleasant and serene.
