    About this property

Charming Cliff Cottage On the Water

The Davis Cottage is a charming 100 year old dwelling that nestles atop a 30 foot cliff overlooking the Penobscot Bay. It has its own steps down the cliff to the shore. and is located in the tiny village of Sandy Point, Maine. Stockton Springs surrounds Sandy Point. We lost our post office (the second oldest in Maine) a few years ago and some of us still cling to calling it Sandy Point. It is 40 to 45 minutes from Bar Harbor (and Acadia National Park) to the north, plus Camden (home of the tall ships schooner fleet) to the south. There are two levels to the house: the tower, and the main floor. The tower and main floor of the cottage have ocean views. It is centrally heated with 3 bedrooms. There is a full bath with claw footed tub, spacious shower, washer and dryer, plus a half bath attached to the master bedroom in the tower. The kitchen has a dishwasher, new stove/oven, refrigerator and microwave, plus a bagel toaster and coffee pot. There is high speed internet but no cable television. The central part of the cottage is the original building, built as an 8 sided tower with the living room as the base of the tower and the master bedroom at its top. The tower itself was built in the early 1900’s while the dining room, kitchen and bedrooms were added as time went by. Because of their unique shape, the cottage, and the 8 sided tower built to the south were called The Birdcages. The tower to the south fell into disrepair and the tower to the north, which became The Davis Cottage, eventually lost its distinctive shape with the addition of several rooms. The foundation of the south tower is still visible as a charming rock garden viewed out the south window of the dining room. The Davis family bought the cottage in the 70’s but have been visiting Sandy Point since the early 1900’s when another family cottage in north Sandy Point was purchased. Eventually, a total of 4 cottages were all filled with family. You will also find an interesting old fireplace for a cozy fire if the evening turns chilly. Outside on the front patio, overlooking the ocean, is a granite firepit. Lots of firewood provided. The cottage comfortably sleeps 6 in beds. It is completely furnished with knotty pine and wooden floors throughout the main floor. The cottage windows are screened and open easily. There is a landline phone with free long distance nation-wide and free internet access. Throughout the cottage should be everything you need for a comfortable stay. Just be “nosy” and open every cabinet and drawer. You’ll find everything from band aids and bug spray to spices and zip lock bags…not to mention beach towels, toilet paper galore and lots of paper towels Dunkin Donuts (caf and decaf)coffee and coffee filters. Ever since buying a labeler I have nearly labeled everything! Bedroom #1 The Master Bedroom Stairs from the kitchen lead up to a small private landing that contains a ½ bath, small walk-in closet, a writing desk and doorway to the master bedroom. The master bedroom is the top of the original 8 sided tower and is approximately 14 feet round. It has a comfortable queen sized bed, two dressers, a recliner for reading, plus a panoramic view of the bay. There is a door for privacy. Bedroom #2 The Guestroom by the Kitchen The second bedroom is just off the kitchen and contains an exceptionally comfortable queen sized bed, a small dresser, closet and recliner. The bedroom has two windows overlooking the westernmost woods and is just a short walk across the kitchen to the main bathroom. It is 8 x 14 feet. This bedroom also has a door for privacy. Bedroom #3 The third bedroom extends off the living room and is the north wing of the cottage. It has French doors that open to the outside patio and a full view of sunrise over the bay. There are two twin beds covered with matelesse bedspreads. The room also has a large dresser, wall hooks for clothes and a writing desk. Privacy can be obtained by drawing curtains that completely shield the bedroom from the living room. Those using this room will walk through the living room, dining room and kitchen to reach the master bath. This room is also 8 x 14 feet. It is hoped that the lack of a real door is off-set by the spectacular bedside sunrise view out the patio french doors. The dining room comfortably seats 6 and in addition to the fireplace in the living room, there is a granite fire pit on the front patio, overlooking the water. Firewood is provided. Hiking, biking, kayaking, schooner rides, fishing, lobster boat rides, whale watching, swimming, horseback riding, golf, tennis, lighthouse tours, kite flying, historic tours and homes, galleries, and antiques are all nearby. The property itself is abutted by a 103 acre oceanfront state park. (An easy hiking trail is just 4 light poles north of the tiny house across the road). Sandy Point Public beach is a minute (.3 mile) down the road at the four-way stop. Indulge in blueberry picking, strawberry picking, lobster and clam bakes, fine dining, a tour of Revolutionary Fort Knox, or a trip up to the very top of the new (and astonishing) Penobscot Narrows Bridge. Don’t miss the Searsport Maritime Museum plus the shops and unique architecture of Belfast. There is always a festival, art show, free lecture, or local theater to attend. Also, if it happens to rain, the cottage is full of books and games to play. Enjoy! The Davis family is delighted to share their cottage with you and hope you have a wonderful stay. Superb stay!

We were in town for a wedding at French’s Point (just a very short walk away), and couldn’t have asked for a better stay! Perfect for what we needed- loved the charming cabin feel, fire pit and fire-starting materials that were provided, grill, games and supply of other necessities like bug spray. We also appreciated the excellent communication with the host and easy check in. Thank you!

          Charming cottage, great host!

Gail did a fantastic job! Not only was her house spotless, with a rustic old time feel and decor, but her inclusion of all sorts of conveniences ranging from coffee to a thorough list of nearby attractions, was wonderful. Thanks for a fantastic stay!
