Ann Arbor, Michigan was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, refugees from the nearby city of Detroit. Today it boasts a population of more than 114,000 people and offers a host of activities for travelers, including the famous annual Ann Arbor Art Fair. If outdoor art appreciation isn't your style, you can visit the Makielski Berry Farm, or go for a long relaxing swim in the Buhr Park Pool.
Ann Arbor is well served by the nearby Detroit International Airport, as well as a fully modern public transportation system. The new Air Ride bus operates 12 round trips per day to and from the Detroit airport. Most visitors to the area tend to stay in the city's downtown area where all of the major motel and hotel chains have locations. However, some elect to settle in one of the city's surrounding neighborhoods, such as Chelsea, Dexter, and Manchester.
Ann Arbor has a typical Midwestern climate. Expect short, hot summers and long, cold winters. Although the peak visiting season is short, Ann Arbor has a vibrant night life. The area is packed with more than 300 restaurants, offering everything from classic American fare to international cuisine. The city is particularly known for its charming outdoor Italian bistros. Elsewhere, downtown Ann Arbor teems with nightclubs and plenty of nocturnal charm.
