With a climate that stays pleasant all year long, many people visit Lisbon to see the city's sites and go shopping. The city is the capital of Portugal, and it is home to Belem, a neighborhood filled with many beautiful hotels, as well as monuments like Statue to Afonso de Albuquerque, Monument to the Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery and Belem Tower.
Visitors generally arrive in Lisbon at the Aeroporto da Portela International Airport (LIS). From there, you can get on the city's metro system that will take you downtown. An Aerobus will drop you off at three different points in the city. Lisbon has an extensive public transportation system that you can easily use to get around. If you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing, it is a good idea to buy daily passes, which give you unlimited use of the city's trams, buses and subway system.
Hints and tips
While in the city, have dinner at a restaurant where live bands play traditional fado music. While you may pay a bit more than you typically would for similar quality food; it is worth it for the musical experience. If you are interested in historical architecture, be sure to make stops at Aqueduto das Aguas Livres, Ponte Vasco da Gama, Ponte 25 de Abril, Museu do Teatro Romano, and Castelo de São Jorge.
