Edmonton is topographically flat, but it is by no means flat in the way of enjoyment, quality of life and entertainment. From arts and crafts, to theater and concert halls concentrated around Churchill Square, Edmonton is a thriving, exciting city. A visit to the West Edmonton Mall, the largest mall in North America, will surprise you. It incorporates an indoor water park where you can surf, slide and experience The Hurricane. It also includes multiple theaters, an ice scatting rink, hotel options, fine dining and miniature golf.
Edmonton's river valley is a large parkland with facilities for camping, urban parks and golf courses, so you'll find plenty of outdoor recreation near your lodging. The city is easily reachable as it hosts Edmonton International Airport (YEG) located 16 miles south of downtown. If you want a glimpse of beautiful British Columbia, driving south through Calgary, and an hour west, puts you in the Rocky Mountains with Banff National Park.
Alberta experiences severe winter weather with temperatures reaching well below freezing, but most winter days in Edmonton are sunny. Although the area has snowy winters, the freezing weather brings the Ice Carving Festival. The city hosts other events during the year, such as the Edmonton Craft Beer Festival, Edmonton Oktoberfest and the Servus Heritage Festival.
