Madrid highlights

  • Madrid highlights
  • Playa Mayor

The main square and city hub is spectacular. Surround yourself with stunning architecture and people-watch before exploring the stores and cafes under the porticoes. Weekend visitors will come across a market or two as well. You can find great bargains at the smattering of art and craft stalls for an authentic Madrid travel experience.

  • Museo de Reina Sofia

This world-famous museum is a treat for those who like their fine art. Check out surreal works by Salvador Dali and iconic masterpieces by Pablo Picasso all in the one place. Entry costs around $10, but if you visit after 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, admission is free. For free entry on the weekend, visit on Saturday from 2:30 to 9 p.m., or Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  • Palacio Real

The lavish home of the royals dates back to the ninth century and is a total must-see on a Madrid vacation. The palace is smothered in marble, art, gold and stunning frescoes and framed by immaculate gardens. Admission costs about $10, or a few dollars extra if you want a guide. If you visit on May 18 (International Day of Museums), entry is free.

  • Buen Retiro Park

Smack-bang in the middle of the city is this stunning piece of nature, El Retiro park. Take a break on your Madrid travels and rest beside the lake to enjoy the pretty flower gardens and old chapel ruins. Don't forget to check out the Palacio de Cristal, right on park grounds. Sweeter still: It's all free.

  • Madrid after dark

Madrid is known for its nightlife. From live-music venues to tapas bars, there's so much to see and savor that you'll barely find time to sleep. If you want to stick to a strict budget, head to El Tigre. It may be teeny, but they provide free tapas with every beer and cider. La Taberna de la Tia Cebolla is best for a heartier meal and everything on the menu costs less than $6.
