Plazuela Machado
This big market square dates back to 1857 and is packed full of shops, galleries, market stalls and cheap cafes and bars. Plus, there is a constant stream of buskers and street performers to watch while you enjoy the warm temps on your Mazatlan vacation. The architecture is lovely, as is the abundance of shady trees – a true Mexican gem.
-
Olas Altas
The charming shores of Olas Altas are the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing dip and start the day on an energizing note on your Mazatlan travels. The beachside bars also have plenty of charm, as well as delicious food and drinks for next to nothing. If you like your snacks on the sands, look out for the vendors selling cheap grilled seafood in little paper bags.
-
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
This majestic 19th century cathedral is amazing. Made up of an eclectic mix of architectural styles, it's definitely a place for budding photographers. Snap the pale-yellow gothic exterior before heading inside to capture all the gold, frescoes and mosaic art.
-
Acuario Mazatlan
If you're after plenty of sea life and educational exhibits on your Mazatlan vacation, this aquarium is a great place to spend a day. Scope the many turtlessharks, seals and even birds, as well as a museum filled with fossils, all for a $6 adult entry fee ($4 for kids).
-
Pueblo Viejo
The old town is a welcome contrast to the touristy Zona Dorada. With its cobbled streets and gorgeous buildings (many of which are being lovingly restored), Pueblo Viejo is the place to come for a traditional Mexican experience on your Mazatlan travels. It's also the place for great – and cheap – food and nights out. Try Te Amo Lucy's for steak, Pedro y Lola for empanadas and Joe's Oyster Bar for bargain drinks and cool tunes.
