Best time to take a vacation to Cancun

  • The year round tropical climate and consequential high temperatures of Cancun mean that there is never an uncomfortable time to visit, but the dry season running from May through to October is the ideal window. Early spring or early fall are a lot less crowded and more likely to offer the good deals on hotels and other accommodations. Every May there is a patriotic parade plus a huge firework display to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Mexico’s Independence Day. Almost as popular is Fiesta de San Román, attracting tens of thousands of people, and Mardi Gras, an always colorful celebration with extravagant floats and entertainment.

Cancun highlights

  • Cancun highlights
  • Mercados

If you're after bargains, unique finds and local flair on your Cancun vacation, visit the many open-air markets. Ki Huic Market and Mercado 28 are two of the biggest and best. You'll find everything from silver jewelry and pottery to tasty food and traditional Mexican garb.

  • Crococun Zoo (Puerto Morelos)

This small-but-mighty zoo features crocodiles, monkeys, big cats, snakes, birds and more. Take the kids to the petting area, then watch the live croc-feedings at noon. A walking tour is included in the cheap admission price, leaving you with enough pesos for souvenirs.

  • Mayan ruins

Not far south of Cancun are the incredible cliff-top ruins of Tulum, a must-see on your Cancun travels. Inland there is Coba, the site of Mayan pyramids nested in the jungle, and the outstanding pre-Columbian architecture in Chichen Itza, most notably the temples and Great Ball Court. A complete contrast to modern Cancun, the Mayan ruins put the ancient wonder of this land into perspective.

  • Coco Bongo

Dubbed Cancun's party hotspot, this part-Cirque du Soleil, part-nightclub puts late nights on the map. The music is classic pop but the acrobatics, confetti streamers, colorful costumes and character make this local institution well worth a night out on your Cancun travels.

  • Boca del Puma

This cenote (a natural sinkhole) found in the Boca del Puma Eco Park is simply mind-blowing. Swim in the crystal-clear water surrounded by a surreal, limestone backdrop. When you're finished, ride the zip line above the jungle for an exhilarating ride and some priceless views. A number of budget-friendly tours are available.
