27 Waterfalls
This is Mother Nature at her best. Take a bus to explore 27 mammoth waterfalls as well as emerald Dominican jungle and local wildlife. A guided walking tour of the first seven waterfalls is around $6 (it costs extra if you want to see more of them), or you can spend more to explore them by Jeep. Word to the wise: Bring your bathing suit and bug spray.
-
Sosua
This beach village is known for delicious seafood, seaside fun and thriving nightlife. El Batey is the most tourist-y bar of the lot, so you'll find plenty of vacationers to share the fun with on your Puerto Plata travels. By day, we suggest a snorkel on the main bay and market-hopping in Los Charamicos.

Shopping
For those of who fancy a shopping spree on a Puerto Plata vacation, the plazas and malls are perfect. Visit the mammoth outlet Plaza Turisol Complex for brand bargains, and the smaller Playa Dorada Plaza for souvenirs and trinkets. If you're in the market for jewelry, La Canoa is perfect and caters to budgets big and small.

Mount Isabel de Torres
Grab a guide and head to this slice of heaven for green, green and more green. And amazing views, too. Alternatively, you can take a teleferico (cable car) for just $5 and view this extraordinary place from above. Don't forget to look for the statue of Jesus – it's one of the most iconic images of the Dominican Republic.

Amber Museum
Housed in a building that looks like it belongs in Victorian London, the Amber Museum is a popular haunt for visitors on their Puerto Plata travels thanks to its great selection of amber gems and gift shop. Admission costs around $2, making it a real bargain.
