Amalienborg Castle
No Copenhagen vacation is complete without an insight into the monarchy, and watching the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Castle. Home to the Danish Royal Family, the castle is a feat of design, and also acts as a royal history museum. Come rain, hail or shine, the guard is on the move every couple of hours, but the main event kicks off at noon each day, and is totally free to watch.
-
The Royal Gardens
A must on your Copenhagen travels is a trip to the Rosenberg Castle, where you can meander through the flowers in these gorgeous gardens. Keep an eye out for the Hercules Pavilion and you may see Hans Christian Andersen's statue peeking back at you. With puppet shows in the summertime, the Royal Gardens is a great way to enjoy the Danish sunshine that won't cost you a single Kroner.

Amusement parks
Copenhagen is home to the two oldest, still-functioning amusement parks in the world, which is a testament to the design acumen of the Danes. Bakken, the oldest of the two, is situated in a forest outside town, which drives its magical appeal. The second is Tivoli, right in the center of town, and surrounding a gorgeous lake.

Stroget
For shopping heaven on your Copenhagen travels, take a stroll around Stroget – the city's famous pedestrian shopping district. Window-shopping is always free, but if you feel a spending spree coming on, head down to the Radhuspladsen where you can pick up some great bargains.

The Little Mermaid
You cannot go on a Copenhagen vacation and miss this photo opportunity. The Little Mermaid sits on a lovely sun-kissed granite rock on Langelinie Harbor. Inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story and one of Copenhagen's most charming attractions, gazing out at this adorable statue goes great with a cup of coffee and a lazy afternoon.
