Newly-renovated battleground hotel within walking distance to Colonial Williamsburg
A cannon and American flag mark the site of the Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center. Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center occupies the same land as the site of 1862 Battle of Williamsburg. The property is within walking distance to Colonial Williamsburg. History influences the traditional rooms with wood furniture and patriotic colors. It does not get any more American than the on-site tap, J.B.'s Tavern, which screens big games while guests down beer and pizza. The hotel lobby features Civil War artifacts and there's even a replica cannon on the hotel's grounds.
Highlights
  • Elegant hotel built on the historic Fort Magruder battleground
  • Within walking distance to Colonial Williamsburg
  • Tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools and Jacuzzi
  • Big screen TVs and cocktails at J.B.'s Tavern
  • Sunday brunch at Veranda Dining Room Restaurant

Great location, old smell

In our first room the screen door wouldn't shut and the staff was very polite and quick to get us a new room even though it was two double beds instead of one king. Location was unbeatable and the pool was very nice. Great price.

Weekend getaway

This is our second stay. The hotel was clean, in a good location, and is pet friendly. I like sitting on the balcony. The courtyard is beautiful in the spring. We spent a day at the Prime outlet, restocking our summer wardrobe. The beds were comfortable. We had to call the front desk to fix the heater. Ithey responded quickly, and was fixed in a very short time.

Good value hotel

Great bed and very clean room. Very long check-in process and, because of that, not very friendly. Housekeepers and restaurant staff were very friendly. Food was very basic and you should always go out to eat or bring food in. About a 5 minute drive to both Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. Due to the price and cleanliness, I would stay again if I was in the area.

Nice Place, Good Value, A little outdated.

This was a nice hotel, roomy and comfortable. It was a bit outdated and had a bit of an "old" smell to it. Other than that, a nice place to stay.

4th of July Family Getaway

Decent, but the hotel could use some work... The hotel had outdated rooms and seemed a little run down. In comparison to other hotels that would have cost the same the room was significantly smaller and breakfast was not included with the stay. With that being said, the hotel is in a prime location to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, Go Ape Treetop Adventures, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Busch Gardens and Water World. Additionally, it has has a few things for the kiddos - a small arcade room and two pools - 1 indoor and 1 outdoor.

Flexible, accommodating

It was off-season (April), but there were folks visiting. Nevertheless, I was allowed to check-in at 10A. The room was changed at my request to the top floor with king bed, quickly and graciously. The 4A check-out didn't phase them a bit; and the clerk at reception was quietly cheerful even at that hour. It's not close to the village, but I had a car and everything's close with a car.

An embarrassment to the Crowne Plaza chain

I waited over a week to conduct this review in an attempt to calm down and be as objective as possible. Unfortunately, the passing of a few days has done little to remedy a completely unacceptable experience. I have seen some reviews in the good to very good range for this property and can only say I am absolutely astounded. This hotel is not only "dated," it is dilapidated, neglected, and in serious need of repair. I am a frequent traveler and have stayed in top-tier hotels worldwide, however, Crowne Plaza is not typically my hotel of choice. I am curious if the difference in reviews results from those who are part of the "club" benefits versus those who are not - perhaps there is a portion of the hotel that is actually cleaned and maintained, however, my room was not one of those. There are far too many outrageous issues to fit in this space but two major ones should be sufficient. During my first night there I heard a great rush of water in the bathroom after midnight. When I went to check it out, there was water gushing from the light fixture into the toilet. I suppose I should be grateful it was landing mostly in the toilet since the desk clerk's unconcerned reply was "I guess the people above you are taking a shower." I was informed no one could help me until after 8am the next morning and the clerk refused to "disturb" those above me so late at night - nevermind that I was extremely disturbed. Besides the water pouring from the ceiling, the room had plenty of other issues: wall socket half out of the wall at the vanity, tattered desk chair, desk lampshade bent - not just askew, badly scuffed wallpaper at bedside table and other places, dirty door facings, and black hair clinging to bath mat. Then there was the coffee pot placed on the fridge. The cord too short to be used anywhere other than the floor or the vanity, but due to the outlet condition at the vanity neither it, nor my curling iron, would stay on. Other guests were having similar problems: no heat, no light bulbs, burned out lights in vanity mirrors, etc., As if that weren't enough, I finally moved the next morning to another room. I was rushing to attend a class for my conference and only had time to put my bags down but just from the door I could see the corner guard missing from the archway to beds, with the exposed old adhesive, and the make-up mirror sagging from the wall. Also, noting I was on the ground floor with an outside entrance I checked to make sure the sliding door had a bar and was secured - it was. I went back to my room at lunch to find the outside sliding door wide open to the patio and parking area and the curtain blowing in/out. I quickly searched my bags to make sure my computer and electronics were there. Fortunately they were. I called, but was told the manager would call back. Since it was again time for another class I stopped at the desk, quite angry at the lack of respect for the safety of my personal property and feeling this was the last straw. The manager said she investigated and the man who repaired the corner wall guard left the door open after cutting the strip outside. I could go on and on with the issues including a complete disregard for cleanliness, inside and out, and for service but the bottom line is that if you choose to stay here you should ask to see your room ahead of time and be certain you are willing to risk the rest.
