Historic Hotel-Near Riverwalk

Stayed over the Valentines Weekend. Great location. Close to theaters and Many fine restaurants along Houston Street. Hotel is nicely decorated. Wonderful beds...tiny tiny bathrooms (this hotel was built like 1900 or so) overall room a bit small but comfortable. Valet parking a bit steep. Overall stay was pleasant. Not a bad place to stay

Business as usual

For a 4 star hotel one would at least expect a schedule of TV channels in the room for reference. Further, when using the sink in the room, cold water would be nice. The cold water faucet literally did not work. The hotel is in a great location for either business or tourism, and candidly is in good, clean condition. However, on this and one previous experience I found basic maintenance, and staff interest below par. While I gave the hotel a second chance, I probably won't give it a third.

Riverwalk location

The hotel is conveniently located very near the Riverwalk, but the standard queen room is very small. The bathroom was the smallest one I have EVER had. If it weren't for the size of the room and the bathroom I would have been very pleased. Be sure to get a deluxe room.

Great location but noisy room

The Sheraton Gunther is situated just two blocks from the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Unfortunately, is is located near some very busy streets. It is difficult to enjoy a nap when you are frequently woken-up by the sound of the air breaks from tour busses and trucks. The room was attractively decorated and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom is small, but had a nice old bathtub. The sink was in the bedroom. The first day we arrived the room smelled very dusty and the rug had not been vacuumed. The next day we complained and the management was responsive.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The Iron Cactus offers excellent Mexican food. The vegetarian enchiladas and the pork and green chile enchiladas are excellent.

Not Waht i exoected

the locatriob was great, right next to the river walk and close to the Alano. weaht they do not tell you is, that there a $30 a day parking charge on top of the room rate, anbd the street noise is very loud, and they indicated on ther web pad newly remodled,, must have been 20 years ago, because the room we had was old abd out dated, not refer, or micor wave. the had to carty my owbn luggage in be whe nchecking out i could not use a luggage cart and had to wait 45 minutes for someone to come and carry our luggae out,, got tired oif wainting so lugged ours down from the 5th floor myself, i am sure that there ar other places better to stay than the $200 a night we paid,,, but i would highly recomment the BIG APPLE BAGLE shop down the stret it was awesome,,

Good Spot

I went to SA for a NBA Playoff game. Great location and great food. Bar in the lobby is also a hit especially for wine enthusiasts. Centrally located also. Only complaint...the hotel is old so the bathrooms are TINY and the old plumbing places the shower head about 5' high. Otherwise cool spot.

Historic Comfort and Convenience

As a frequent visitor to San Antonio, I've often wanted to stay at the Gunter, but my plans took me elsewhere. This time it was the perfect choice, just a block or two from the River Walk and in the heart of downtown. The lobby was beautiful, and the lobby bar, McLeod's, served a tasty and very reasonably priced omelet, a good option on a Lenten Friday. My room was nicely appointed with very comfortable bedding. My only complaint was the thermostat -- when I raised the temperature, I got cold air! Fortunately the bed was so inviting, I just hopped in and went to sleep.
