Can't be beat for history and location

Let's start by being honest- this is not a chain hotel like Marriott. The rooms are smaller, older, and more dated. But what you lose in cosmetics is more than made up for in location, the beautiful pool, and historic value. There is only one Menger- stay here and experience it! Definitely ask for a balcony room- although they do not have king beds they are bigger and the balcony is great. Hotel is in need of a facelift but I can overlook it for the sheer historic value of the place. Breakfast in the colonial room is also good, location is unbeatable, and public areas are incredible. Enjoy San Antonio!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

San Antonio has a B-share, or Bike Share program. Pick up a bike at the Convention Center and take it into the King William District, or to Market Square. No one uses these, and they are CHEAP to rent for the day!

Perfect Location

We were looking for location and definately got it at the Menger. We are also history buffs, so we didn't mind that this was an OLD hotel with small rooms, etc. If you are looking for the most in comfort and amenities, this might not be for you. Our room was very well air conditioned and clean, but the towels were sad. If all you are going to do is sleep there, it will be fine. If you want a home away from home, the need for repair might be an issue - EX: our bathroom needed some serious TLC. But we were walking distance from everything we wanted to do including Riverwalk. I had some unexpected work come up and the business office was always open and easy to use. The staff was good to us, the food in both bar and restaurant was good and we would return to this hotel.

Go to Tower of the Americas Restaurant. 750 Ft obsevation tower and restaurant. Area with tables rotates a full circle every hour. Go to see sunset, you won't be disappointed. A little pricy - but worth it!

Conference Experience

I stayed a the Menger because the hotel that my conference was at was on the expensive side. The Menger was a quick walk from everything I needed to be near. The staff were supportive, courteous, and helpful in all of my questions--they pointed me in the right direction, made dinner reservations, and even (actually) remembered me from one transaction to another. The room was clean, but the shower was dreadful! The water sprayed all over the bathroom and the water temp seemed to change every minute as other guests used water in their rooms. Comfortable, central and a great historic hotel--but with "historic" you seem to have slightly less than perfect creature comforts!

Great location

Our stay at Menger Hotel was fantastic. We could look out our window and see the Alamo, or throw a rock and hit the riverwalk. The hotel itself was beautiful with great food, shopping and a friendly staff. We very much appreciated the historical value of the hotel.

Has positives and negatives

I stayed 3 nights at this hotel and had mixed feelings about it. I will start with the positives: The Mengor has a great location. It is within walking distance of the Alamo, Riverwalk, Mall, Convention Center, Ripley attractions, and many other places. Also there is a lot to look at while walking around the hotel. Heated outdoor pool, hottub, fitness room (few cardio machines) and a good restaurant. Also the staff is very friendly. Now with the negatives: They charged $27.03 per day for parking. This is not optional since there is nowhere else to park. Also they do not tell you the price of parking until you are checking out and are paying for it. If you are planning to stay here, make sure you factor this into your decision when looking at the price of the rooms so that you don't leave feeling ripped off like I did. Also the room itself is very small considering the price per night. Just the room alone would make me believe this was a 1 or 2 star hotel.

Loved the old elegance even though the floor is squeeky!

My stay was for an event at the convention center which was just a short walk. Also located next to the Mall, I shopped on my way back each night. Ate at the Menger Restaurant, food was fabulous, elegant dining room and wonderful staff. Will be back for sure with husband.
