No fun for kids- good for adult time

This is a beautiful hotel and great if you want to relax without children. You can lounge in their gigantic and dimly lit lounge. They have a nice bar with a dance floor. The room was spacious and had a great view to riverwalk but husband slept on floor because bed was too soft. My kids were unable to go swimming because there is no pool. This is beautiful hotel and staff is very helpful. If you like soft beds- this is great!

Rather Dark in the Room

With a dark carpet and a dark bed frame I found it hard to keep from bumping my legs the first two days. But I did seem to do that less as the week went on. There was a lovely lunch buffet on Friday with good choices (the paella was quite nice and the triple mousse chocolate cake was wonderful). Like several hotels I have stay in recently the idea of being green is more a "feel good" card than an actual program. I was rehanging towels but there weren't enough towel bars for the clean and the gently used one and housekeeping didn't seem to get the message.

Nice weekend

My wife and I stayed here while we in town for the weakend. Great atmosphere, nice room and one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in away from home. Staff was friendly and helpful. Easy access to the Riverwalk. Cons: very expensive valet parking and room service left a lot to be desired. We ordered a quick breakfast one morning and we were told it would be up in 30 min. An hour later, it arrived. Food was ok but cold. For the price, I would have expected at a warm meal.

Great hotel, minor problems

Really enjoyed the the stay at this hotel--very unique and comfortable. Only two problems: The pillows (we both woke up with sore necks), which were maybe a little too thick. Also, at checkout time, the valet parking service is very slow. They could improve their service by moving cars that don't get claimed in a timely manner so other vehicles can be brought up. One SUV sat directly in front of the hotel for about 25 minutes before anyone showed up to drive it. Several other cars sat empty at the curb for long periods as well. Meanwhile, other cars were unable to be brought up due to the congestion.

Weekend Getaway..!!

From the time of arrival until we departed was a fantastic experience… The staff were first class 24/7 and the property was always clean. The location of the hotel is on the River walk. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to San Antonio. We will be coming back to this hotel when visiting San Antonio in the future. - FES

Kept getting worse

Normal check-in is at 16:00 but when my boyfriend and I got there at 18:00, the room wasnt ready. Apparently a large group of people had paid extra to check out at 17:00 so the rooms weren't clean for the people to check in that afternoon. I thought that it was unacceptable that we arrived at 6pm and the room wasnt ready. My boyfriend stayed at the front desk and complained until we finally got a room at 7pm but apparently a lot of others were having the same problem and weren't close to getting a room. The hotel couldn't even provide an estimate of when the room would be ready when we arrived. My boyfriend demanded our valet to be comp'd and also since we were missing our dinner reservations due to the delay, the manager gave us a $50 dining credit at the hotel. Once in the room, the TV wouldnt work and the room consistently smelled like someone had just taken a poo in the bathroom even though neither one of us had. The water pressure in the shower was pitiful. When we checked out at the end of the weekend, I got home to find that I had a $30 charge on my card from the hotel. When we called to see what the charge was for, the manager couldn't find a charge to my card. Im not sure how this happened but now Im having to file a dispute with my bank. The hotel appearance was nice and in a fantastic location, but I would never stay here again due to all of the inconveniences.

Citrus is broken but otherwise good.

The Citrus restaurant is undergoing a management change. We tried one dinner and two breakfasts and then gave up. At Sunday breakfast people were walking out after waiting for an hour and getting no food. Monday breakfast was better but still broken. Saturday night dinner was slow and items were out. But there are many good restaurants within a block or two. I didn't know what to expect of the Riverwalk. It was nice but amazingly small. The "river" is a canal about 4 feet deep and 10 feet wide. The walkway on either side is about 3 people wide with no railing between you and the water. The main area of the Riverwalk is a horseshoe about 4 blocks, by 2 blocks, by 4 blocks. The quintessential picture with the restaurant and shops is representative of about 2 blocks of that (on the North side 4 block stretch). The Hotel Valencia is well situated for a two block walk to the Riverwalk, at one end of the better part of the Riverwalk. The Hotel itself is very underlit - a bit dim in the public areas, and downright hard to see in the room. Find every light and turn it on and it is still dim. During the day throw open the shutters and things are OK. But everything worked (well I've never used Dish TV before - it sucks - many seconds to change a channel - but I'm not there for the TV). The beds were comfortable - the doormen very attentive and helpful. The WiFi was fine for a Hotel (3 Meg each way) - not like home but as long as my phone works its OK. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy - but so are most downtown areas. San Antonio has more police than I've ever seen anywhere else, and the homeless are very polite. Much nicer than Seattle where I live, and a ton better than Vancouver BC where I visit downtown from time to time. It never felt unsafe, and at 60 years old I'm not someone pan handlers are afraid of. For breakfast try the deli at the Sheraton Guenter hotel that is kitty corner, or the Osta at Hotel Mokara on the Riverwalk. For dinner definitely do Luke a block to the North, and Texas Land and Cattle on the Riverwalk two blocks to the West. A simple Mexican dinner can be had at the Iron Cactus on the Riverwalk by the barge tours two blocks away. The Mexican restaurant below Hotel Valencia made both me and my Sweetie sick - but maybe it was something else than the restaurant. It tasted fine when we were there - it was just later I had severe heartburn and she tossed it up during the night. If you have more money the Le Mansion Hotel and Hotel Mokara on the Riverwalk had balcony rooms that overlook the Riverwalk - I might buy up if I ever went to San Antionio again. But then again, there isn't a lot in San Antonio so I probably won't go again. But it is a nice town with nice people - and in November the weather is good compared to most places.
