Not a good place to stay

Booked and paid via O. That part went flawlessly. This was a 2-night business trip and needed to be near the capital. The hotel had mandatory "valet parking" -and was an extra charge- which was not made known anywhere (not including the expected gratuities from the valets). Hotel insisted that I should've been told. Not happy, but not much I could do. Check-in attendant had quite a bit of attitude about this. Not a good start. -to be fair, the valets themselves were courteous and professional. The room itself was small but serviceable. Fixtures and amenities were circa 1972. Clean, but in dire need of updates. Worn walls and carpeting, patched ceilings, corroded bathroom fixtures -not even the 'bowed' shower rod, now commonplace -making the shower quite claustrophobic. The tub floor appeared quiet 'dirty' but this was likely the result of generations of stick-on, anti-slip appliques -still, it appeared to be quite filthy. The location on the ground floor was VERY noisy, both from the valet car parking all night long and the above walkways and foot traffic. It was almost unbearable on the 2nd night (a Saturday). No sleep at all. There were no electrical outlets available at all -again, standard issue on any modern (that is, post 1995) hotel for computer and phone charging -it was either no lamp or no alarm clock (again a relic from the last millennium). Location was convenient for my needs. Near the Capital and not a far walk to the 6th Street District. A little sketchy at night though. The driveway entrance and check-in were treacherous, cars pulling in (guests) and out (parking valets) making return trips quite challenging -and sometimes impossible to pull in. All in all for the price per night that this place charged I expected a lot more. I would not recommend to anyone -and would in fact dissuade anyone from staying there. If I had had another option by the time arrived I would've stayed somewhere else. A very big disappointment. Clearly a franchise operation as other LQ hotels have been quite good -another reason I chose this. So I would hope that La Quinta corporate would examine this place for standards and risking the brand's reputation. I generally do not want to denigrate an establishment trying to run a business, unless it is so egregious that it warrants others knowing. In this case it is. The hope here is to let O know, its customers, and the LQ organization (a separate letter has been sent to them) in an effort to prevent potential disappointment for others. And a small hope that the establishment itself will hear a real-world guest perspective, without hyperbole, so that they may consider corrections in the future (the hope is small though in that if there was even a modicum of awareness there, it would've happened long ago).

Weekend Getaway with Friends

Great place to stay if you're on a budget. We were able to walk to most of the places we wanted to see from this location. Although the hotel offered few amenitites and not enough cots, the free continental breakfast offered enough to get our day started.

Great Location, Thin Walls

The location in the heart of downtown Austin is perfect. This is an old hotel desperately in need of remodeling. The walls are thin and it's noisy late at night when 6th St. partiers come stumbling back to their rooms. Since the balconies are outside, this makes it even noisier. I hope the plan is to tear down and build a new one soon. Then I will surely be back, but I'm sure the price will go up like the other downtown hotels.

Beware of the valet parking

The parking is valet only & while it is prbaly necessary due to the limited parking, but getting out in the morning is tough because everybody else is doing the same thing.

Good stay

This hotel suited my needs really well; I chose it for its location (close to the UT campus). There's all sorts of great eating places in walking distance and there are a few bus stops nearby as well if you want to go farther. I also like the amnesties it offered (though the fitness room is small and outdated and the pool loomed small). And all the staff were friendly and very helpful with any question. The rooms were a great size for two people (I was traveling with my mom). Downsides are pretty small details. There is no airport shuttle, but I didn't have a problem taking public transportation to get there. The room had a runny toilet and one of the surge protectors was too loose to stay in the outlet. Small things! I would stay there again if I needed to be near campus in Austin.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are so many great places within walking distances. Just a few blocks down the hill is Serranos Mexican food and then a few more blocks on either side of them is the Brick Oven pizza and Stubbs BBQ (they have wicked fast service!). There's also the Clay Pit on the other side of the capital building if you don't mind walking for about 10, 15 minutes that had good Indian food.

Best Value for Your Hard-Earned Dollars

My sister and I stayed at La Quinta for 5 days while our family gathered to celebrate a graduation from UTAustin. Pretty much a typical hotel room, but with a pillow-top bed. Decent HD TV, generous continental breakfast. Admittedly, the coffee in the room is pretty bad, but Austin is full of cafes. Best dollar value if you don't use your own car. Parking is not free. The location is great, right off the freeway and one block away from the beautiful capitol grounds. What La Quinta does not have in the way of amenities it sufficiently makes up for in the eager friendliness of the staff. I needed to have the room coffee maker replaced and I had barely shut the door to my room behind me when a staff member was there with the new machine. Also, I had loaded up at the continental breakfast and someone at the front desk must have seen me crossing the parking lot with the food. The staffer helped me by holding some of the food while I fished out my key card. The valet workers were also very helpful and kind, letting me know that street parking is free on Sundays.

Locks don't work

We had to switch rooms three times because of nonfunctioning locks on doors- where we could not get nor get out of our room. Positives about hotel: maintenance man was very nice and eager to help, good location, pet friendly. If you don't mind the safety issue of not being able to get in or out of your room in the case of an emergency, then stay here.

Meh

The hotel was below average in quality/cleanliness/amenities, but the location is pretty decent (very walkable to downtown). Unfortunately, there was an unhappy dog in the room next to mine the first night, and because I paid through a travel website the hotel was having a difficulty time refunding me for that night. Otherwise, this is okay for someone on a budget, but there are probably equally as good options if you look around.
