Gracious and convenient

We totally loved the Vendue Inn. The Rooftop bar was very nice and "The Library" (restaurant) was exceptional. It was very close to the river and right in the center of the historic district. We were able to walk everywhere. There were great perks also. One being a wine and cheese hour every evening and a complimentary full breakfast each morning including "bananas foster french toast". I can honestly say the staff was the most polite I've encountered. Rhonda

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

It would be best to visit Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Place in March or April when the azaleas and camellias are in bloom. But when we went in May the confederate jasmine in Charleston was intoxicating. Be sure to take a walking tour. Ed Grimball's is fantastic.

Wonderful January Charleston stay

Exceeded our expectations. We were upgraded to a beautiful king room with a fireplace. Loved breakfast in the lovely library restaurant and enjoyed a glass of wine in the afternoon. The next time we stayed here I would ask about a window in the room as we were in an interior room with no windows. Being January, it wasn't so critical. Highly recommend the Vendue Inn.

Below Par

Overall the hotel was below par. Room was extremely small--perhaps the smallest I have ever stayed in. Not sure if this was a punishment for the fact that they originally wanted to put me across the street in their "annex" hotel. The whole annex concept seemed like a total scam. Basically the hotel bought a building across the street and used that building to house some of their overflow quests. I would not recommend this hotel. The hotel also seemed to lack any real amenities, i.e., there was no gym or fitness center (nearest was 8 blocks away).

Great locale at great price

Typically my fiance and I stay at more "budget" minded hotels, but when I saw the Vendue Inn as an option for our trip to Charleston, I jumped on it. The only amenity really missing from this hotel is a fitness center and free parking, which is tricky in Charleston anyways. We opted for self park for 14 and valet was available for 18. This hotel is in the French quarter and close to the historic distric. Most major sights are less than a mile away and they offer free bike rentals in case you wanted to do that (but they only have ~8 and on first come first serve). The rooms were nicely decorated and we had a normal queen room (no fireplace, but window), which was nicely furnished. Our bed may have been slightly too plush but not enough to prevent a good night's sleep. They offered some type of free breakfast to us both mornings although the selection we got the second day was the "expanded" menu and we weren't sure why we got the better menu the second day. Either way, the basic option (pastry, fruit, granola and yogurt, coffee, juice) is a decent option and filling enough - you just don't get a choice over what the pastry is. They also do a wine hour at 4pm and cookies and milk at 9pm, both of which are nice add ons. The staff was friendly and the wifi worked great during our stay. I would definitely look to stay here again if I could get the same room rate, which looked cheap relatively to what I would've priced the room at.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There were two places we ate at that were worth noting: the Hominy Grill, which is not really within walking distance and on the other side of town, was great for more traditional southern cooking. The she crab soup, fried green tomatoes, big nasty and squash casserole were all memorable and good. The other was Magnolias, which was a 2 minute walk from the hotel and offered more upscale dining and a great dinner option. The fried oysters and bourbon glazed porterhouse porkchop were all great. We also got rabbit, which was just so-so.

Charming in Charleston

Vendue Inn is a lovely, historic property in a perfect location. Excellent restaurants (McCrady's is right around the corner), the river, coffee shops, art galleries - all the things that make Charleston such a great place to visit - are right outside your door. The staff are attentive, responsive and warm. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever had the pleasure to sleep in.
