Built three centuries ago- the city of Charleston is one of the best-preserved architectural treasures in the United States. The colonial houses lining its narrow streets are an eloquent reminder of its joyous and tormented story- like a condensed history of America. The birthplace of swing and the Charleston dance - made famous by Josephine Baker - the city still has all the charm that it owes to its multi-ethnic origins. Entering the Planters Inn- overlooking the Old City Market and the many art galleries- is like stepping back in time. On the patios full of tropical flowers and fountains- you will relax to a serenade of jazz. As well as sipping delicious cocktails and tasting the generous American cuisine- you can discover the nearby sites of Cypress Gardens- Middleton Place and other famous old cotton and tobacco plantations. CLUB 5C- Hotel welcomes Relais and Chateaux Club 5C members with a VIP Welcome and a Discovery Privilege. Please include the Club 5C membership number in the reservation and please show your Club 5C membership card on arrival.

Great Boutique Hotel

I would love to stay here again. Andrea at the front desk is amazing. This hotel is wonderful. They provide everything you need before you need it and the location is wonderful. This was my first trip to Charleston and I could not have picked a better hotel. The Peninsula at the Inn is the best meal in Charleston. I am so glad I got to stay here.

Expensive, but worth it

The staff and service at this hotel was impeccable. We also loved the little parlor room with free tea and crackers and water. Be sure to eat at the hotel and have the coconut cake... it more than lives up to the hype.

perfect location

Highly recommend the Inn to other travelers. It is located within walking distance to local attractions. Excellent room service and I enjoyed the fresh baked cookies every night that were left in my room.

Great place in historic district

The high ceiling room was large and well furnished, including a four poster bed. Wonderful mattress with luxurious bedding. Large screen TV on wall opposite foot of the bed. Very quiet, even though this hotel is centered in the busy historic shopping district, right across the street from the famous City Market. We were in the main building which appeared preferable to the other adjacent building. Very courteous staff who were not intrusive, but anxious to help in any way possible. The used towels in our bath were replaced twice daily. We did not dine in the hotel restaurant, The Peninsula Grill, but other folks said it was excellent.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

On the street curb right outside the hotel, there were bicycle taxis being operated by young men of college age. They could transport 2 persons. They were a great way to be taken on an informal tour of the area, especially the beautiful residential section of historic homes between Broad St. and the south Battery, about a half mile from the City Market area where the Planter's Inn sits. Some of these bicycle drivers could do a great tour with narration, even though they are not marketed as such. This was a fun alternative to the horse drawn carriage tours carrying 15-20 riders which many tourists were taking.
