not a family friendly atmosphere
The room was not big enough to put the suitcases anywhere Lights were dim and all in all. it was a very unpleasent experience. I also signed and paid for ride from and to the airport. The one to take me back to airport never came and we had to take another vehicle. As for the area it couldn't be better

Don't stay for more than a day.
I chose this hotel because it was much cheaper than any other hotel I could find, and I was only staying in Manhattan for two days. The location was also perfect for what I needed to do. However, the rooms are tiny, there are no bathrooms in the guest room, there is a community bathroom with showers. The bunk beds are small, the hotel clerk yelled at me when I tried to check in. The TV can only be seen from the bottom bed. I would say if you need a place to stay for one night, go ahead.. but bring sandals to wear if you need to shower!

It's Not Fun To Stay at the YMCA
While in New York City for five days, I took advantage of the location of the Westside YMCA. That is really the only 'plus' for this lodging. Noise: Walls are thin, generally folk are non-considerate when moving about late at night. Comfort: The beds are beyond terrible. They severely sag in the middle and it's really difficult to get a good night's sleep (then combine THAT with noise. . .). Unclean: I did my best not to use the shared toilets. They are sorely outdated and definitely not kept up to standards of cleanliness. Staff: Upon my check-in Maximo (Customer Service) made an enormous scene about my reservation and made me feel utterly humiliated in front of other members as well as staff. While I conveyed my complete disgust directly to his manager, this is something that should never have happened.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Eight Avenue, between 53rd and 40th, is a bounty of restaurants. If you can't find a diner or full-scale restaurant to your liking here, you're insatiable. Pam's Thai on 43rd is a solid thai restaurant with non-expensive pricing.

West YMCA
After I made the check in I went to the room I didn't like it. That hotel look like a shelter facility. I never thought that the room will be too small like that, I change my mind right away. I didn't stayed in there; We went to stayed on my friend's apartment. Just I recommend the hotel for single people that don't care anything about it.This hotel needs remodeling.

Disappointed
No towels in room, 2 of 3 elevators broken, so it took a lot of time to get from the top to the 1st floor to request towels in the morning, then it took even more time to get back up, one staff member was really rude and inconsiderate. Wasted a lot of my time on behalf of their mistakes. Small room, no remote for the TV, AC didn't work that well, no drinking fountain on the floor so I had to go to the lobby to get water. You share a big bathroom with everyone else on the floor (male and female separate, of course). Small room, with tile, not carpeted. Check in is at 230, which sucks if you get in early in the morning.

excellent location, very bad smell
I went to a short vacation. The location is great (also very easy to get to JFK using a direct subway from Columbus Circle), also the public access to the internet was ok, and TV. However, this hotel stinks (at least the 8th floor)! the public toilets were not clean most of the time and it was impossible to open the single window of my room, so no fresh air could balance the smell. The average price I paid per night is $80. I think YMCA could afford some little improvements with these level of prices.

Thd good, the bad and the really ugly
for sightseeing YMCA is exellent situated, the guests are really international,we hope that next time the little restaurant will be opened again. The size of the room is smal, but one can managed. The bedsheets and towels are clean but the walls need some wash, the type of guests are perhaps a problem. The shared restrooms are very, very basic and often untidy.

Never again!!
The only thing we will remember about this hotel is seeing German cockroaches running on my bed, walls and a mirror as we entered the room in the evening!! That's good we have strong nerves... Among other things was the TV which existed in the room but was unavailable to watch because the only working outlet was located too far. I was too tired to go demand other room just for one night, but I will never stay here again for sure!! It is the height of imprudence to ask this price for such conditions!!!!

Sleepless in New York
Awful Night's Sleep
An awful night's sleep! The bed was as hard as a rock. The pillow was flat and painfully hard too. After trying to sleep for an hour on the bed and pillow, I went to the front desk at 11 p.m. and asked for another pillow. I was told that housekeeping had left for the day and that there was no way to get a pillow! No one on staff tried to accommodate this totally unsatisfactory situation, and just kept repeating the same thing over and over, and then suggested that I try to "use a blanket" as a pillow. I had an awful night, and was exhausted the next day. I would not stay there again and will not recommend it to anyone. It was not even inexpensive.
