As luxurious as advertised

We had a great stay at the West Side YMCA. We were able to check into our room early, and even if we couldn't, we could have checked our bags for a dollar each (which we did for the day upon checkout). The place is just a few blocks from the nearest subway stop and literally half a block from Central Park. Hot water was plentiful in the showers on the mornings we slept in, but a little scarce just after the prime shower times. The beds were as to be expected (thin mattresses and pillows), but the crackling noise that was made whenever you or your bunkmate moved was a not-so-nice surprise...still, nothing you couldn't get used to. We never had to wait for the bathroom, but our floor wasn't full when we were there. With the number of rooms for the number of bathrooms on the floor (one for each sex), it seems it could get a bit crowded when full up. As was mentioned in other reviews, there was a gap between the window frame and air conditioning unit. For the weather we were experiencing, it wasn't a problem at all. The free wi-fi access was spotty in our room, so our phones gave us a better internet signal. Mobile phone signal for both of us was fine in the room and the bathroom, but non existent in the lobby area. All in all, a great stay for the price, and you can't beat the location.

The bad and real ugly

No information on floor to help find room initially. No information as to what YMCA offered. I found out the "Y"had a swimming pool. As I attempted to enter. I was informed I needed a swim cap at $6.50. I obtained the cap at a store for $6.00. Then as I attempted to enter with cap in hand. I was informed I needed a lock. I missed another day of swim. I attempted to find pool. NO direction SIGNS to help find With cap and lock in hand. I entered pool. The pool was for power swimmers only. BIG pool 6 swimmers using it. I was refused entry. I was told there is a smaller pool. There were four people in pool. I was told it was for arobics only. another big pool and only four people using it. That was my last attempt to use pool. I asked front desk for information to nearest subway station. I was given longest and more complated route. One day I no towels were left in room. When I requested towels before I left to see sights. I requested towels. None were left in room. I had to return to front desk and request towels.

THe use of the sauna steam room

THe use of the sauna steam room , gym and swimming pool was most welcome ,its an excellent location next to Central Park and good for Columbus Cicle 59th Street Subway and Uptown /Downtown trains for $27 Dollars a week Metro Card. However very noisey a school playground next door from 9am , and the YMCA attracts many Young Students who are very noisey and lazy leaving the communal bathrooms in a mess at times ..although regular cleaning goes on ..they do not use the bins and leave the place untidy ..

A great college dorm experience

Great, cheap alternative to a regular hotel. The rooms without bath are small, beige, no decoration, old and remind me of a fifties dorm room. Surprisingly quiet with TV in the room and a reasonable size closet. The staff is very nice and responds to requests quickly. The YMCA gym is awesome and I used it for the classes and showers, which are free to hotel guests. Clientele similar to a youth hostel. Walk a block to Lincoln Center or Central Park. Would do this again for short visits.

Yuck

As an experienced international traveller who has stayed in a wide range of accomodation, I was horrifically surprised with the NYC West Side YMCA. I chose the Y for 3 reasons: 1 price As a single traveller in NYC hotels are extra pricey The price was not worth it because it was so bad. 2. Location With the subway, bus and taxi again it was not worth it. Although, I did feel safe in the area late at night which can not be said about all areas. Like most everywhere in NYC there was building security. 3. Due to taking a lower cost option I mistakenly thought that there would be a reasonable standard. The staff were friendly but not helpful or knowledgeable at all. I never did get the extra pillow I repeatedly asked for nor was I able to get answers to simple questions. The entire of the interior of the building but especially the area where the rooms are located has been neglected for a long time - plumbing, hole in a shower which lacked privacy, no hook for shower stalls , plugged toilets, peeling paint, beds on wheels, rusting faucets, the list could go on. The cleanliness was not existant to the point I am surprised that rats do not visit! To their credit my bed was made daily, with what looked to be fresh towels. They claim to have fee wifi but it is only accessible in the lobby when it is available. They have a cafe of sorts that is not too bad which is open if there is not a function. It has a limited menu but options to buy grab and go food. In summary ... do not bother ...

NYC Unlimited Metro Card is essential and cost effective for a trip to the city. One must be aware that once you swipe the card at a location you can not get back in for another 18 minutes.

Such a deal!!

I got to NYC threw my bag in the room and didn't get back until 10:30 each night. What else do you need! Clean - NO BEDBUGS - relatively comfortable. Hey, my room had a view of Central Park!! Where have you stayed that security checked your key to see if you were a guest? It isn't Trump Towers, that is 3 blocks away!
