Just say NO!

I was traveling by myself for fun. It was a great check-in. The hotel staff was polite during the day-time. However, I lost my key while at a Broadway show. I came back after hours & tried to explain the situation. Even though I had 2 forms of government I.D. they WOULD NOT LET ME BACK INTO MY ROOM! I offered to pay for the key, said what room & floor I was sleeping on, & they said no! I had to find somewhere else to sleep! Terrible experience. Wouldn't recommend to someone I hated!

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

It's a great location. Only blocks away from Columbus Circle & a 10 minutes walk from Times Square. (However they may lock you out of your room, kind of defeating the point of a hotel.)

The rooms/hallways/bathroom are

The rooms/hallways/bathroom are pretty rudimentary -- kind of like a dormitory at a second-rate college forty years ago. But that was just fine with me! Everyone was friendly and accommodating, I had everything I needed, the location is fabulous and the price is great for Manhattan. It may not be to everyone's taste, but it suited me just fine.

a no-problem stay at the West Side YMCA

greaqt location right in the heart of NY! even though it's not a 5-star place, it's totally worth it if you don't mind older buildings and furniture (but nice and clean!!!) and a shared bath (pretty clean!). would definitely recommend the place.

Location, location with a hard mattress

Strictly for the super budget traveler. Tiny room with a hard college-dorm bed with a single pillow, a loud ac unit, lineoleum floor and tv and a desk with a bible in it. On the other hand, you're steps from Central Park and Columbus Circle subway, which can get you anywhere in Manhattan and eventually the other boroughs, and you can't beat the price. Depends on what you expect and want.

Expect what you pay for

The upper layer of the bunk bad was too low that I couldn't even sit on the bottom bed erectly. No protection from falling down on the top bed. No shampoo or toothpaste or toothbrush, but I brought my own. Shared bathroom. It is good if you just want someplace to sleep in middle Manhattan.

I've stayed at this Y many times

I've stayed at this Y many times since the 80's. Cleanliness has improved markedly. With full use of gym facilities and location between Lincoln Center and Central Park it can't be beat for the price.Though not for the overly picky.

GREAT location and price

This is a spartan room, without a private bathroom, BUT I could have eaten off the tiled floor in my room, which was exceptionally clean, I was able to use my netbook from my room with the free wi-fi, and the location was awesome. I am a 61 year old single female, I was there by myself, and I walked everywhere I wanted to go, leaving around 8 in the morning and returning around 11:30 at night. The biggest drawback, for me, was the showers which were extremely small but had even smaller shower curtains, and the sound level from the hallway. However, I worked around it, using the showers when I got back at night while the younger women were still out, and that way I had the showers pretty much to myself. When I was tired enough, I was able to go to sleep regardless of the noise level.I wouldn't suggest going here for a romantic getaway, but for a travel base for Manhattan at a great price - I don't see how it could be beat. [...]checked me in[...] She was extremely friendly and helpful, as were the other clerks that I had dealings with. I not only would recommend it, I would stay here again!

For a hostel facility the West

For a hostel facility the West Side YMCA is as good as you can expect it to be. I stayed on the recently renovated 13th floor. All room and bathroom facilities exceeded my expectations. Personally, my only negative comments: -Unable to open the bedroom window, and I prefer some fresh air at night. The AC worked well though (if noisy). -No kettle in room although I know that this is more common in the UK than anywhere else. A cup of boiling water from the downstairs cafe cost a quarter and was not available 24 hours. -The cafe downstairs was comparatively reasonably priced I suppose, but still felt a little expensive for the quality of the cooked food. But those are my ONLY negative comments. The security, staff friendliness, facilities etc were such that I felt that I got great value for money. Best of all was the proximity to Central Park, where I often sipped my morning cuppa. I would definitely recommend this YMCA, especially if you're on a lower budget.
