A Bargain

The hotel is a bargain, being exactly what it is -- a European-style, simple but adequate hotel across the street from Lincoln Center. If you are interested in attending opera, ballet or symphony, there is no better bargain in the city. Three bus lines and the subway are also across the street and make it central to other places you may want to visit. I have recommended it to friends being careful to note what 'European-style' means.

Good for budget

What you would expect. Great if on a budget. Not very clean, and not fancy, but if you are only going to be there to sleep it's a good bargain.

NYC-YMCA

Staff was friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the gym, the pool and the restaurant. The room was clean and quiet. The neighborhood was safe. I walked to a performance of Handel's Messiah at the Lincoln Center and to the Big Apple Circus and to wonderful restaurants. The subway was a five minute walk and Central Park was a two minute walk. Find me a better experience for the price!

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

The Met, NYC Ballet & Philharmonic are down the block. A one hour dry cleaner is across the street, and for someone on a business trip, the gym and pool is an elevator's ride from your room. The overall experience was stress relieving.

Good location, minimal comfort

Pros - Decent place for breakfast/lunch in the lobby. Great location across from Central Park. Safe to walk around at night. Price was fair. Private room. Cons - Shared bathroom was ok, but several of the guys would shower with the curtain wide open so you would walk in the bathroom and see fully nude young men. One morning one sink was full of nasty vomit. Sheets had bloodstains.

The Food Court at Whole Foods in the basement of the Time Warner Building has great food. Not cheap but very tasty. For cheap food head down 9th Ave to the 50's. Lots of reasonable choices.

Location and the gym

We all know that YMCA is not at all fancy - it is not a hotel. However, this Y is very conveniently located. I also like to have the gym, steam room, and sauna available. All in all, it is not a facility for everyone, but for me, it works.

Weeekend shopping, exploring with friends

The building is definitely a historic building. Nice outside, but the inside was less to be desired. We didnt spend that much time in our room, but to sleep. It was a bunk bed, but the pillows and bed was not bad. The showers were steamy hot and of course shared. The staff needs to do a better job with the cleaniness. I hear that the Y at the Vanderbilt has the same concept but clean.

Horrible Bathrooms

I stayed at the YMCA for only one night in a single room with shared bathroom. This shared bathroom had only one toilet working with the other two almost overflowing and disgusting. To begin with, three toilets are not sufficient when there are more than 50 rooms on the floor. For a hostel with so much limited comfort, the price was outrageous. The best part of this YMCA is its location next to Lincoln Center. Otherwise, I will look for other accommodations on my next visit to New York.
