Getting worse

It's my secopnd time at this hotel and it's getting worse, while also more expensive. The main problem is the bathroms which get dirty soon after cleaning due to some guests' negligence #to put it mildly#, so it is unpleasant to take a shower or use the toilets. Also, the security staff is rather unfriendly which makes one feel uncomfortable. Still, the location is great so you have to decide for youself.

Like a dorm

Location and price are great. Overall, it's like staying in a college dorm. Very basic small room. Bed is not comfortable. Good idea if you just need a place to sleep at night and don't plan to be around during the day. Also, mainly good for single travelers because there is hardly any space to move around in the room. The shared bathrooms are not convenient, but they are OK. Bring your own soap, shampoo. They provide soap, towel, pillow cases, and sheets, but I would recommend bringing your own if possible.

It is what it is

If you're staying in a 100 buck a night room in a city where the average rate is over twice that just to get into a basic "chain hotel", you should adjust your expectations accordingly, which I did. And as such, I was pleasantly surprised to find a room that was big enough, air that was cool enough, and shared bathrooms that were juuuuuust clean enough, but barely. In terms of location (access to transit/security/markets) it can't be beat. I basically needed a room to sleep and change in, while the for a few days. It did just that, and nothing more. The bathrooms were a bit of a challenge, as it felt like being in college again, which if you're in college, or recently out may not be a big deal, but it was for me. I would just say if you need a clean, average temperature, personal bathroom keep looking or pay for the nicer rooms. Otherwise, you cant get much better than this for the price.

Theres a whole foods in the basement of the Time Warner Center. Eat there if you're gonna be there for more than a day or so. The food's tasty, relatively healthy, affordable, and quite varied.

Bad Experience

I am sorry to say that I had a very unhappy experience at the West Side Y this trip. I had stayed there a few years ago and been satisfied. My flight arrived early in the day and when I inquired about an early checkin one staff member said she would check to see if the room was available. It was not but when I asked again later in the day I was chastised by another staff member for even inquiring telling me, "She told you this morning you couldn't check in early." I apologized for the misunderstanding but then was treated like a problem guest when I did check in at the appropriate time. I witnessed other people being allowed to check in earlier than the 2:30 check in time. Plaster was falling from the wall around the window in the room I was assigned. The bathrooms on my floor were not clean. They stunk. On another occasion when a YMCA member and I tried to board an elevator in the lobby a YMCA staff member snapped at us to "hurry it up!" This was after she closed the elevator door on me. No apology for the door hitting me in the arm. Just a "hurry up!" The door had only been open a few seconds. She had pushed the close button. Many on staff were friendly but there were a good many staff members who did not seem to realize they were working in a service industry. The halls on my floor were never completey clean and the entire place was filled with large groups of foreign tourists (mostly very young). They left the bathrooms dirty. Wifi was only available in the lobby and could often not be accessed because of the large amounts of guests logged into the system. A cafeteria that was in operation a few years ago on the ground floor was no longer operating. It had been a good place to catch several economical meals on my last trip.

Stuffy smelly closet w/ a perfect view

10 min walking distance from Time square. Good for a cople of nights. Location is great, but rooms and halls are smelly, bathrooms are awful. I would recomend it to those who are looking for a cheapest place to stay in NY and are not afraid of incomfortale conditions.

Good for one day

I hated the fact I couldn't check in until 2:30 and I'm guessing that is the rule for everyone, because it took a while for everyone to check in. After waiting so long to check in, the cleaning people were still in my room cleaning so I had to wait outside. Hate the fact there is community bathrooms. Great location though, right across the street from central park.

Cheap. But you get what you pay for.

This hotel was at a perfect location, being that is next to Central Park which is where i needed to be. But i wouldnt spend more than one night here. The Shared bathrooms sure are an inconvenience. I wasnt comfortable with that at all. And there seems to be Students roaming the halls at all times. So if u dont mind being woken up in the middle of the night...you know where to stay! But over all, great price for the location. Only recommend for a one night stay.
