Great location/price but basic rooms

Very basic accomodation. If you only need a place to sleep & leave your bags while exploring New York then it's fine. Price is good (for NYC) & location is excellent but don't expect any luxury.

Poor

It was a very primitive and poor hotel. Floor of the room does not have carpet. The lightening of the room is very bad and the room is very depressing. The bathrooms are not clean and smells bad.

unbeatable location, nice cafe downstair

We were trying to stay under budget to enjoy other things in NY. The Y was safe, nice staff, great cafe, great location. The community bathrooms were cleaned once a day and needed more. The showers were just adequate, but all in all, a good experience and would do it again.

hotel needs long-term maintenance

Staff was quite helpful and friendly. I liked the in-house cafe, internet, phones. Close to important attractions. Bed sagged uncomfortably. The room and bathroom needed long-term maintenance repairs, such as paint. For the amount of money I paid for 2 nights, (about $170?), I'd think the room should be made up every day.

Acceptable

I had a great time in my second trip in NY. As for the YMCA I found the staff in both; front desk and reception to be unfriendly and condescending. I thought Paris was bad enough. On the other hand What amazed me was how very friendly and so very helpful the dozens of people I talked to in the city. The rooms were clean and the towels and bedsheets changed daily. However the two urinals were not flushing in the common washroom and the stench was too much. But to be fair, the last day of my stay they had fixed one of them. All in all the location is good and the place is alright hopefully the front staff attitude would also improve.

If you are shopping on Broadway make sure to check the prices as the same item will have much different price from vendor to vendor or store to store.

Great location, nice price but few perks

I stayed at this Westside YMCA on the Upper Westside of Manhattan (5 West 63rd)for two nights, June 11, 2010 and June 12, 2010. It is just down the street from Columbus Circle, the Time Warner Building, Trump International Hotel and Towers, and the 59th Street subway entrance. Also across the street from Central Park West, which is very busy in the daytime and very beautiful at night. I liked the location, and my sleeping quarters were okay. Most of my problems were with the shared bathroom. When I first arrived, it reeked of urine. I also had trouble with the hot/cold water fixture. I never knew what type of water I was going to get. Housekeeping eventually cleaned the bathroom, so that was okay. The Y furnishes towels and soap but no wathcloths. Also there was no remote for the cable television set. Outside of the problem with the water and the washcloth, my stay here was fine. There is a nice restaurant, and most of the people are friendly. If you are planning to stay here, bring washcloths and towels. Also, find out how to use the water faucet.

Take the subway. It will save time, money and energy. Most New Yorkers are helpful. They will tell you what train to catch, also the attendants are on duty until 10:30.

Great for the price.

My wife and I needed a place to stay for one night that was inexpensive and put us close to a metro stop so that we could pack in as many fun activities in the short time we had in NY. This place worked out great for that. The price was really reasonable for a hotel in Manhattan, and the people at the front desk were very nice and helpful. The room was clean, but small, and there's no queen beds, just bunk beds and singles as far as I understand, so we just got a bunk bed, but it worked out fine, and we weren't really staying there to hang out in the hotel anyways. The bathroom is a communal bathroom shared by the entire floor, and as such it isn't spotless, but it wasn't a mess either. All in all, if you're looking for a decently priced place to sleep and want a good location this is a great way to go. My only complaint would be the fact that the reservation we made on [...] didn't show up in the hotel's system. Luckily, even though it was a holiday weekend, they had space available, and they were really nice about it at the front desk. They just gave us our room key, made a copy of the confirmation that we got from [...] (which we had luckily brought with us) and said that they would work it out with [...]
