For some, a stay at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York is almost as fundamental to an authentic Big Apple vacation as seeing the Statue of Liberty or sipping a Manhattan cocktail. Opened in 1931, this Art Deco building maintains an enviable reputation as one of the finest hotels in the world, with luxurious fixtures and fittings, individually designed rooms and king-sized marble bathrooms. The Waldorf Astoria also holds its own when it comes to fine dining - two very well-known dishes, the popular Waldorf salad as well as Eggs Benedict, were invented in the Waldorf's kitchen. Weary travelers can book a treatment at the Guerlain Spa - imbibing in the Pure & Radiant Back Treatment or the Scalp Massage and Reflexology sessions - while shoppers are amply catered for at the boutiques surrounding the lobby.

Neighborhood

The Waldorf Astoria New York was originally based at the site of the Empire State Building, but now resides at 301 Park Avenue, parallel to the well-known streets of Madison Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Home to a pleasing array of greenery and floral displays, the avenue is also handy for getting around attractions in the rest of Manhattan, from the huge oasis of Central Park to lively Times Square, as well as connecting visitors with upscale neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and the Upper East Side.

Excellent accommodation

Great hotel experience. The only items that would have made it better would have been a coffee maker in the room and space in the fridge for water bottles.

Some how overpriced

Expensive, no free internet, room average, no mosquito mesh protection on the windows, long lines on the counter. Do not open windows at night...

Go to Babbo restaurant, if you are first traveler, take a one day tour (do not take the stroller to the tour), and then decide.

Waldorf Astoria Lives Up to Its Name

Beautiful hotel which presents itself as the historical icon which it is known. I was a bit concerned ahead of time due to some unflattering reviews I had previously read regarding the deterioration of many of the rooms. I was thrilled to be welcomed to a large room with amazing air conditioning (which any true New Yorker knows is hard to find). Yes, certain components were truly in disrepair. Examples include torn fabric on chair at desk, caulking coming off in bathtub, and window shades that looked like they had seen better days. But the beauty of this room was not missed on me, the old style elegance that had been maintained was phenomenal.

Good coffee shops nearby for breakfast

My mom ordered room service for breakfast the first day. While the croissants and coffee were exceptional, I had a heart attack at the $100 cost. There are several coffee shops on Lexington that would do the trick for a fifth the cost...but they do not deliver while you are still in your robe. ;) The hotel room was so quiet I would have thought we were the only people there if the lobby wasn't so hopping.

Coffee shops and food carts abound on Lexington, and even on Park. Then there is the Grand Central Market too.

Love the Waldorf!

I loved the Waldorf from the minute we arrived to the minute we left! The staff was friendly and very accommodating. Our rooms were restocked and cleaned daily. The beds and pillows were very comfortable! I thought I was at home!! The rooms were quiet and the view up Park Avenue was outstanding. The location was perfect for going both north and south on foot or by cab.
