For some, a stay at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York is almost as fundamental to an authentic Big Apple vacation as seeing the Statue of Liberty or sipping a Manhattan cocktail. Opened in 1931, this Art Deco building maintains an enviable reputation as one of the finest hotels in the world, with luxurious fixtures and fittings, individually designed rooms and king-sized marble bathrooms. The Waldorf Astoria also holds its own when it comes to fine dining - two very well-known dishes, the popular Waldorf salad as well as Eggs Benedict, were invented in the Waldorf's kitchen. Weary travelers can book a treatment at the Guerlain Spa - imbibing in the Pure & Radiant Back Treatment or the Scalp Massage and Reflexology sessions - while shoppers are amply catered for at the boutiques surrounding the lobby.

Neighborhood

The Waldorf Astoria New York was originally based at the site of the Empire State Building, but now resides at 301 Park Avenue, parallel to the well-known streets of Madison Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Home to a pleasing array of greenery and floral displays, the avenue is also handy for getting around attractions in the rest of Manhattan, from the huge oasis of Central Park to lively Times Square, as well as connecting visitors with upscale neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and the Upper East Side.

Hints and tips

eh.

I was disappointed. I expected some luxury with it being the Waldorf, but was not impressed. The lobby is elegant, but the rooms are old and you could find better for cheaper.

Icon In Need of Some Attention

This iconic beauty is in DIRE need of some attention. Cracking, peeling paint and wall covering in the rooms, horrible, old mattresses, filthy window coverings, mold, cracked tiles, broken faucets in the bathrooms...broken windows, the list goes on....although the lobby is still breath taking! I can check this grand hotel off my bucket list!

Fantastic little store with FRESH cooked to order food, just around the corner on Lexington and 49th. A great place to pick up extra snacks, water, etc.

Best Travel Experience Ever

Had two rooms for ourselves and our son and grand-daughter. Everything was perfect; bruch at Oscars on Sunday was excellent, not to mention the service. We were treated with such courtesy and kindness. Able to walk everywhere; luggage held after check out and then they had a cab for us!

Wanted and was treated to the classic hotel experience

I really enjoyed my stay. Recent reviews made me worried but I felt going in the price was cheaper than other hotels to accommodate older rooms. I decided to upgrade and for $75 more/night I had a beautiful junior suite. We were very happy. Staff was excellent. I would definitely stay there again, especially if they are just under the price of competitors in the area.

Very happy with their service

Hotel is beautiful and rooms are very comfortable. Their staff are wonderful. The only thing I was surprised about it's that they didn't have a restaurant/kitchen for guests. Maybe I'm wrong.

no coffee

No coffee in the rooms. No coffee in the lobby. Coffee in the restaurant downstairs, Oscars, after 7am when they open for breakfast buffet, which was $44 per person. There are Starbucks in the neighborhood open after 7am, but if you are an early riser and want a basic cup of coffee in the morning, forget it. I thought it was irritating. Even in a good hotel, and I stay in plenty, I would like the ability to have an affordable light breakfast or lunch sandwich without having to travel to get it. And coffee seems so basic. The hotel was lovely. The staff friendly. But the amenities were awful. The room was very small, the tv was difficult to operate, no fan in the bathroom. Location is good if you're in town to shop on fifth avenue. Otherwise, this part of Park Avenue is so far from everything, you'll spend all your time trying to find decent food. I give it 3 stars at best. Sorry. If you want fun and food, go down and stay near the High Line. That part of town was awesome.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Save your money and do not go to the top of the Empire State Building The lines in and out take forever and are very claustrophobic. We thought it was a huge rip-off. Walk the High Line instead, its free and much more fun. And there is nothing gay anywhere near this hotel. We were literally the only gay couple there. I love high end hotels, so we thought we'd try it because of its grand old reputation, but I"ll not go back. You can't even get coffee. Its the most overrated hotel I've been in for 20 years.
