Disappointing

We don't need fancy, but this was unacceptible. It doesn't merit any stars, but that's not allowed on this review web page. For 2 adults and a teenager, there was 1 bed, 1 futon, 1 sheet, 1 thin wool blanket, 2 towels, 3 pillows, and 2 pillow cases. Since this is NOT a hotel, there is no one on site to contact. Nor is there wireless in the room or any contact information in the room. There was a hefty bag in the closet with dirty laundry. Did I mention mold in the bathroom? On the positive side, this is a great location. If it was cheaper and we were told to bring sleeping bags, it would have been ok...maybe.

BEWARE! Very poor experience!!

As a businessman, this was the worst travel experience I had in the last 40 years. If possible, I would have given it an even lower rating. First I had to go to a different location on West 89th Street to get a key and a couple of clean towels. Once I finally got to the Village Apartments and checked in around 11pm after an all day trip from the west coast, I found out that someone else had stayed in the room and the room had not been cleaned. The bed had obviously been slept in and not made. The bathroom was so small that when I sat on the stool my face was in the sink. The bathtub/shower looked like it had not been cleaned in a long time and there was no toilet paper to be found. When I complained to the receptionist, he said that he didn’t work for the hotel, but he would take down the complaint and pass it on. He couldn’t guarantee anything would be down about it. In his defense he did get me a roll of toilet paper. This place may be okay for students at nearby NYU, but for a businessman STAY AWAY!!!

Great location/ poor appartment

We arrived after 12 hours of travelling to be told we had to get in a taxi to collect the key. This we refused to do and were eventually given a cleaner's key. The room size and small kitchen suited our needs but it had not been cleaned and indeed there was only one working light in the whole apartment. The windowless bathroom had no working light whatsoever and it took them 24 hours to fix this and until the next morning to provide us with towels. The cleaning when it did happen was questionnable which was confirmed when I stood on broken glass and found a broken light bulb on the floor. Some of the door staff were helpful, however the manager who we could only speak to via phone was totally unhelpful and lazy which proved quite frustrating. However the location was perfect in Lower Manhattan within walking distance or an easy subway ride away from all we wanted to see. Washington Park was around the corner and a great place to hang out at the weekend. It was cheap accomodation by Manhattan standards but I would still have expected more from the price we paid.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

Washinton Square on a weekend is excellent entertainment with a plethora of musicians and a variety of strange and wonderful street artists to see. Sit and enjoy it all for free with a cup of coffee or a picnic.

Third-world hotel; dirty, small and not what it looks like in photos

This hotel is actually not a hotel...it's more like residential complex (mostly students). No front desk; just one guy with attitude who lets the visitors in. Make sure you pick up a key before you go to this place. The key is located 4 miles in Upper Manhattan...enjoy the nasty pink bathtub. Definitely not a good place to experience NYC. If you are looking for nice, room-service, relaxing place this is not it. Reconsider booking here.

This is not a hotel; it's a fraud: BE AWARE...

This hotel is a fraud. Please be aware there is NO FRONT desk. . This is a residential complex and most of the residents are students. Once we arrived, we were told to go get a key in Upper Manhattan office (their central office). We paid about $60 dollars in taxis & wasted about 3 hrs driving to get the key. When we got the key, it did not work and could not open the door. Then, finally the bellman came to help and what a shock....The photos they used to advertise it look great...however, the room is very dirty, old, tiny & feels like a 3rd world country environment...not NYC...I booked there because I was told it has a kitchen & I needed a microwave for my 3-month baby...I felt so bad that my little baby had to be exposed to this nasty hotel. We cancelled on the spot and relocated immediately...

Location and staff are good; everything else was bad

The two men working the front desk were friendly and helpful, and the location was perfect. The room, however, was not good. It was not well cleaned. I had to put sheets on the bed myself. The hallway was smelly. In our two room suite, one of the rooms had no working lights. The TV didn't work. The internet didn't work. The mini-fridge had not been cleaned at all. The shower had mold in it. The closet was filled with laundry bags of dirty sheets. The only upsides - we had plenty of clean pillows and blankets, and the air conditioner worked well.

Location, price, and...refrigeration

I like these accommodations. Simple enough, but since you are not me, it's probably important that I add a few qualifiers. I lived in New York for five years, I went to NYU, and I like to have a means to refrigerate my purchases from the Union Square Greenmarket. If you, like me, want to stay somewhere that is reasonably priced in this area and don't mind a place that is more like your average old, un-renovated NY apartment than the Ritz-Carlton, this is your place. (Honestly, I could care less about the pillow-top mattresses, faux-riche furnishings, and pseudo-luxuries of those sorts of hotels.) The Village Apartments is clean and efficient (and a bit endearingly shabby), and the location is perfect. I had a cute little refrigerator in which to deposit my greenmarket snap peas and in which my husband could chill beer. All of which will mean I will happily stay there again. But, as the husband said, the place might be a bit of a shock if you are more accustomed to staying in the average hotel.

Great location

The apartment room was small, but the location is great. It's not the best, but it's a great place to stay if you want the NY way. If you are looking for something all inclusive, it's not the place. The doormen were helpful and nice. One block away is an easy access to the subway. There is a diner and cafe around the corner of the location that is 24 hours. NYU is two blocks away. Quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

Don't go there!

Simply appalling. Dirty all over, especially the bathroom. Or "bathroom." You can find much better places for that price...
