I felt stranded at "The Strand"

On a recent business trip to NY City, I stayed at the Strand in midtown. While the facility is new and was clean, the amenities left a lot to be desired. They do not have a restaurant, and offer a very limited continental breakfast in the AM. In addition, they have not quite figured out how to service their clientele with a wake up call, or housekeeping. The wake up call never did come, and I had to call to request my room be serviced. Helpful staff, gorgeous hotel

Warm, welcoming, knowledgeable staff. Brand new hotel so everything was fresh and very stylish. Ideal location within walking distance of shopping, bars, restaurants, etc. but on a side street that makes for a nice, peaceful hidden gem of a block - my friend was able to park right in front of the hotel on a Saturday. Very nice restaurant/bar in lobby and a fabulous rooftop bar. My only complaint was it closed at 1am. Definitely will stay here again!

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Ginger man and the bar next door to it was very fun for the 20s, 30s set. Hop in a cab one night and go out in the lower east side (brunch at Sidwalk Cafe in Alphabet City is recommended too!) but you can always go back to the bars near the hotel - they are open until 4am.

Great Hotel

First class modern hotel in a good central location- Time Square:10 mins walk and nearest underground station:5 mins walk. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. Great rooftop bar. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel- it will certainly be top of our list when we next visit the city.

Boutique chic hotel in heart of midtown

This hotel's location is a great jumping off point to Time Square and 5th/6th Avenue Shopping. It's on a side street, so it was quiet as far as the big city goes. The decor was art deco and very comfortable. I know its an older building and only has 2 elevators, but, I did it find it annoying that it would bypass the Lobby floor as it went from the LL or SC to the rooms above.

Only 5 short blocks from the Empire State Building and about 7 blocks from Time Square, less than a block from 5th Avenue shopping.

Would never go back!!! A design disaster

We did not enjoy this hotel AT ALL. The Strand advertises itself as this sleek, modern space, which it tries to be. But nothing can compensate for the fact they have only 2 small elevators serving 20 floors, including the popular roof bar's guests, and - listen to this - the service staff (yes, with the trolleys, luggage, dry cleaning, supply boxes for the roof bar, etc.) ALL share these 2 small elevators. The result? You wait, sometime up to 8-10 minutes for a ride. We were in the 18th floor, so very little choice there. When you finally make it into one, you share with loads of people and stop at almost every floor, especially in the morning and late afternoon. The second bad point is the breakfast. It is nice to have it thrown in - but the room currently allocated for it (they claim it is temporary) is far too small for the amount of guests, the replenishing of foods on the one tiny buffet serving everyone is slow, so there always is something missing. The food itself is very acceptable: bagels, fruit (if you are lucky), small sandwiches, bread, cream cheese, jams, coffee/tea, cereals (although here again the selection varies, you may have to settle for sugary kiddies ones). Extremely lucky if you also get the delicious yogurt and granola (they are snatched first, I think). In short, as my husband described it: Refugees Camp Breakfast. Disgusting, we thought. After 2 hellish experiences we nearly gave up but we then discovered (no one bothered to tell us) that there was another room to use (but no buffet, you have to go back and forth, but it is at least quiet!) They do provide free copies of the New York Times (which is great - yet not on Sunday). There is free wi fi.The location is good, in the garment district, between 5th and 6th Avenue. The design (in terms of colours etc) is very pleasant. The room (they upgraded us) was acceptable size but I dread to think what is the size of a standard room. Housekeeping needs to improve:One day our room was still undone by 3pm, other times we found pieces of paper on the carpet, and generally a chaotic arrangement of our private items. If you are used to, and happy with, 3 star hotels, do not mind lots of people all the time in the far too small public areas (lobby also looks like a refugee campsite 70% of the time) - you may enjoy it. But if you like your comforts, hate waiting for elevators, and squeezing in with ten people each time - do not even think about it. We definitely will never go back.

We loved the Red Cat, vibey and good food in Chelsea (on 10th Av bet 23rd and 24th) and Telepan (W 69th street), very good organic, fresh cuisine.

The Strand New York

The hotel staff was kind and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable, although a little small which is normal in New York. My only real complaint is that it did not have a restaurant so you could not get room service. They served a continental breakfast from 7:00 am to 10:00 am. I am an early riser and this was a problem for me because I had to wait to get a cup of coffee. I could have waited to eat but I want coffee when I wake up and would rather be able to stay in the comfort of my room without having to get dressed to go downstairs. I told the check out staff about my concern when leaving the hotel on the final day. That is when they told me that they would have delivered a coffee maker to my room on request. HOWEVR, the hotel did not have a book stating this option and it was not posted anywhere. I only had two printed pieces of paper on the dresser. I had no idea this was an option and that would have made a big difference to me.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Take the double decker bus tours. You have three loops and each one has a tour guide who gives you history on the areas you tour. It was amazing and you got to see so much. I never would have been able to see that much of New York without the bus tour. You can get on and off the bus throughout the tour whenever you want to explore.
