Understated cool at Madison Avenue boutique hotel with hot restaurant
This quietly cool boutique hotel on Madison Avenue is for guests for whom "coolness" is a natural extension of their being. Its remake in the 1980s spawned a trend of urban hotels with slick interiors and design sensibilities. High-end perks of a stay at the Morgans include Egyptian cotton linens, complimentary breakfast, and the on-site Philippe Starck-designed restaurant, Asia de Cuba. The Madison Avenue location puts guests in the heart of the Midtown business district and close to shopping on Fifth Avenue.

Highlights
  • Complimentary continental breakfast
  • Hip on-site Asia de Cuba restaurant
  • Close to Fifth Avenue and the Empire State Building
Location

The hotel is about five blocks from the Empire State Building and six blocks from Times Square. Shopping is plentiful along Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. Bryant Park and the New York Public Library are an easy walk.

Rooms

Rooms have a monochromatic look with decor in shades of gray and white. Expect beds with Egyptian cotton linens and down duvets and pillows. In-room amenities include flat-screen HDTVs and Wi-Fi (fees apply). Bathrooms are decorated in black and white tile and feature agua by Korres products. Larger suites have sitting and/or dining areas. The duplex penthouse has its own greenhouse, kitchen, media room and two terraces.

Features

Guests can relax in the living room with its TVs, book collection and computers. There is a 24-hour fitness center. Valet parking is available (fees apply).

Dining

The on-site Asia de Cuba restaurant is a long-running see-and-be-seen New York institution. The dramatic space has soaring ceilings and a large, marble communal table. The restaurant serves Asian- and Latin-inspired cuisine. It is open for lunch Monday through Friday and dinner daily. The restaurant also serves continental breakfast daily.

Friendly helpful staff, great location, cozy, clean rooms.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night. We attended a party a block and a half away. It was great not to have to worry about driving home after a long night. The location is perfect. A few blocks from 34th Street shopping and Penn Station. The hotel was a little difficult to find from street if you're driving. There's no signage, door mat or doorman in front. Plus there was a bus stop in front which deterred us from stopping. If you pass it, be prepared to take 15-20 mins to get back around because of the thru streets during rush hour. After making the third pass I decided to call to find out the exact location. If it weren't for the doorman hailing a cab we wouldn't have found it. We left our car for the valet and went to check in. The staff was great. They were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. They gave suggestions for places to order food and even printed up a menu for us. The room was nice. It was clean, comfy and had modern furnishings. The bathroom was small. There was no room to move around in. The toilet was directly behind the door. There was no vanity mirror with an outlet close to use a dryer or flatiron. There was a mirror in the bathroom that was a high. Another little in the desk that popped up but you'll have to slouch in the chair if you want to see yourself. There was a hidden full length mirror in the wall by the window seat but no outlet. Other than that the room was great. I would definitely stay here again if there was deal on the rate.

Service with a smile

Great staff!!very friendly and helpful with recommendations and assistance. We got caught by a parade that closed the street as we were leaving and the bellman walked us 1 1/2 blocks with our luggage to catch a cab.

Moonstruck Cafe down the block had great breakfasts (we wanted more than the continental breakfast at the hotel) and lunches with fantastic salads.

Pretty Good

Generally a really good experience and I would give it 5 but just once or twice the desk staff were a little less helpful than I would have liked.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

Plan activities in advance if you're going during busy times, it helps to avoid queues and disappointment. For some activities e.g. Federal Reserve Tour you must book 5 days in advance.

Excellent hotel, well placed for

Excellent hotel, well placed for easy access to both uptown and downtown Manhattan. Really good concierge service, managed to obtain us a reservation at one of NYCs top restaurants for a prime time evening slot even though we didn't ask until late on the Thurs afternoon.
