TERRIBLE

This was the most horrific nightmare. The closet couldn't be opened because it was blocked by the nightstand. There were no outlets in the bathroom and the mirror was hanging on by a very thin thread. The carpet was brown and stained everywhere, and NONE of the fixtures / furniture had seemingly ever been replaced. The hairdryer was kept in the closet which thank goodness I'm skinny and could squeeze in to find it... and I had to plug it in in by the bed because there were no outlets in the bathroom, and it sparked! I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy!

Only useful for its location...

The Hotel Pennsylvania in NYC was one of the worst establishments I have ever visited! The check-in process took over 2 hours. Once at the room, the conditions were absolutely disgusting. The bed linens were ripped and smelled musty. The heating system was not functional - later found to be unplugged after crawling under furniture at the recommendation of the front desk. The room was cramped with a gigantic armoire making it difficult to get around to the other side of the bed. And then the bathroom facilities - there was no hot water in the shower, the tub itself was moldy and filthy, and the showerhead would only accomodate a person less than 5'2 tall. There were no complimentary amenities such as an iron, coffee maker, pens/notepads when trying to write down directions to our dinner function, heck, there wasn't even the standard Bible inside the desk drawer - actually, the desk drawer had been broken off and just splintered corners remained. The worst part of this visit was that these issues were brought forth to the front desk folks on the few trips through the lobby... especially the complaint of no working lights in the bathroom. I was told the maintenance staff would be upstairs right away to replace the fluorescent light fixture --- this never occurred during the course of the visit. There are several other negatives that I will leave out, but you should get the overall picture. NOW, the GOOD POINTS: if you are looking for a hotel that is close to all the NYC sight-seeing locales, this is definitely in the perfect spot. It is right across the street from Madison Square Garden which made transportation simplistic. Rock Center and Times Square are a short walk from the front door. Shopping facilities are everywhere and the Empire State Building provided for a fabulous view just around the corner! Hotel Penn is a very expensive closet to store your belongings whilst seeing the sights in the city.

Terrible Room

The room was extremely small with just a conventional double-bed and there was not a single chair in the room. The carpeting was old and stained and the furnishings were sparse. The single window was almost completely blocked by a hutch and the controls for the air-conditioner were out of reach behind the hutch. The hallways were dark and dismal. They reminded one of an old institution like a sanitorium.

A Dirty Dump!

This had to be the all-time worst hotel experience we have ever had. The rooms smelled horrible. They were old, dirty, paint peeling, water leaking, mold smelling, etc. I guess you get the picture. Never would I recommend this hotel to even my worst enemy!

A disaster

Please don't stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania. The A/C and heater in my room was broken. The wi-fi was only available in the lobby, and despite costing $3 per hour, didn't work well enough to let me send email. The bed, which was rock hard, literally gave me a rash upon waking. And best of all, when I complained, the staff directed me to write in a complaint. It was like a bad comedy movie, except that it was real. I beg you, don't ever stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania.

Overdue for demolition

Great location -- directy across from Madison Square Garden -- can't think of anything else to recommend the Hotel Pennsylvania. Old, poorly maintained, no air conditioning. Sleeping on the street is a viable alternative to staying here.

DISAPPOINTED

I REALIZE THAT DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU TRAVEL, YOU MAY HAVE TO PAY A LITTLE MORE. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU PAY AS MUCH AS WE DID, I AT LEAST EXPECT TO HAVE AN AIR CONDITIONER WITH WORKING KNOBS THAT YOU CAN TURN TO YOUR DESIRED TEMPERATURE. I ALSO EXPECT, WHEN THE HOTEL KNOWS THAT YOU HAVE TWO PEOPLE STAYING IN ONE BED, TO HAVE A BED BIG ENOUGH TO FIT TWO PEOPLE IN IT..... NEITHER MY HUSBAND OR MYSELF ARE BIG PEOPLE AND WE WERE TOO BIG TO BE SHARING THAT TINY BED. I ALSO EXPECT THE HOTEL STAFF TO BE AT LEAST A LITTLE FRIENDLY WHEN WE ARE PAYING THEM TO STAY THERE. NOT SO THE CASE! THE LADY THAT CHECKED US IN WAS EXTREMELY RUDE AND INTERRUPTED CONSTANTLY WHEN TRYING TO ANSWER HER QUESTIONS. WE WERE TOLD THAT IF WE HAD ANY QUESTIONS ON HOW TO GET SOMEWHERE WHILE IN NEW YORK TO ASK BELLHOPS AT HOTEL AND THEY WERE ALWAYS ON THE PHONE & ACTED VERY INCONVENIENCED TO HAVE TO TALK TO US. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED NEW YORK & WILL GO BACK, BUT WILL STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE NEXT TIME.

THERE IS HOWEVER A VERY WONDERFUL IRISH PUB CALLED THE BLARNEY ROCK RIGHT ACROSS 33RD STREET FROM HOTEL. BARTENDER IS REALLY FROM IRELAND & EXTREMELY FRIENDLY. WARNING: THERE IS NOWHERE IN NEW YORK TO GET ALCOHOL WITHOUT PAYING AN ARM & A LEG!!!!
