Very dirty scruffy and eerie

When my mother and I arrived the reception staff were not welcoming and rather rude, we were eventually given rm 408 's door card. OMG - dark, cold, smelly large room, bathroom on the left ( which we later found a very large dead cockroach in!) carpet was sticky and dirty, the 2 beds had rusty brackets sticking out of them and the top bedding was stained along with the curtains and walls. The air conditioning unit was something else, absolutely high bound with built up dirt. 3 horrible internal doors lead from this room but behind two it was just boarded up with ply wood and the third door opened into a dark smelly room that had no light switch so who knows what was in there. The bedroom had an old dirty alarm clock on the floor with a broken old tv unit with the tv in it. We asked if we could move rooms, we saw 3 other rooms which were not any better and they said that tomorrow a better room will be available for us, so we stayed in that room for the first night. Just as we were getting ready in the bathroom my mum thought it was a dead mouse on the floor near the toilet it was in fact a huge cockroach that had obviously been there some time. The hand basin was not attached to the wall and all the fixtures and fittings were all rusty. At 6 am the following morning I phoned down to reception asked the manager if she could come up to this room and see where we slept and get this cockroach out of the bathroom, she said managers don't come to the rooms, all she said then was she would get house keeping to deal with the cockroach and the better room she said we could have would be ready after 12 pm no apology or anything ! We went out for the day and when we returned they gave us the door card to the other room on floor 8.I took my 72 yr old mother to that new room and went to the first room to collect our luggage. The beds had been made but the cockroach was still there, so I packed our stuff up and took the cockroach to reception in the plastic cup from the bathroom. I gave the cockroach to the manager behind the reception and he said that is unacceptable and said he will refund the accommodation on that room for 50% plus complimentary breakfast vouchers for the remaining mornings. The new room was just about ok but still not good, but we had a holiday to enjoy and just got on with it. I would recommend that people avoid this hotel as it will be the thing you remember most about your trip!

Hotel Pennsylvania NYC

This is a large, older hotel with high noise level in the huge lobby. There are no frills - no coffee pot, but there is a coffee shop and a cafe downstairs, plus a shop to buy water and snacks. There was an iron and hairdryer. The bed was very comfortable. The room small. Staff were pleasant. If you want luxury this is not for you, but if you want a reasonable cost hotel and you don't plan to spend much time at the hotel this is good value for New York city.

Actually, pretty good...

Have seen many negative reviews for this Hotel... Shame... It's not the 'Ritz' but it's nowhere near the price either... This is a busy, large hotel in a great location... The rooms & corridors are a little tired, but our suite was clean & serviced daily... The Location & cost of this hotel far outweigh any aesthetic let downs... Seriously, if you're in your room long enough to be dissapointed, you need to get out more..!! Would recommend to anyone on a budget who wants a base in a great location...

Graduation stay

Came into t town and needed a central place to stay. All subways lines are close by, train is across the street. Lots of places to eat. The hotel staff were great. Room was clean and did needed updating according to other reports. The carpet in the hallways were old but not thread bare. I would recommend this place for the price. Only complaint in a room with a king bed, there was only 1 chair to sit on in the room. Toilet flushed loud but it was fine.

NYC Getaway for cheap

This was our second time at this hotel, but the first time using the internet to shop around. We upgraded from the very basic room to a king size bed with continental breakfast. Very smart choice. We found this room to be more spacious and better maintained, especially the bathroom. This bathroom easily accommodated two people and had a bathtub. The other one...well, we weren't desperate enough to use the tiny shower stall that needed a complete overhaul. The breakfast wasn't anything to write home about-bagels and tiny muffins/scones. There were also single-serve, fancy, coffee machines. For a quick meal and coffee fix, it was great although a madhouse. We found the staff to be mainly pleasant. Front desk people are A+ with hospitality and efficiency. I found it strange how often the housekeepers wanted to clean our room. (Do Not Disturb..?) Especially, when they could have used that time to detail clean other rooms a little more, like a little extra dusting or moving furniture to vacuum under and around. Little details that definitely did not ruin our stay. I would totally recommend this hotel if you are looking for cheap and convenient. It's across the street from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden and, if you are not opposed to walking, almost every NYC attraction is easy to get to by foot. Central Park is the farthest we walked. It took us an hour, but we did stop shortly at two stores in Times Square.

Good location

Its location is great but our room was facing to the wall at 17th floor. Carpets were not clean at all and furniture was really old. There are 12 elevators which is more than enough. Hotel is permenantly full but we never waited for elevator. If the price is cheap it may be a good choice but its not lux at all.

Great Deal

We had read mixed reviews about the hotel and so were a little apprehensive about staying here. However, we found the room to be very clean and comfortable. The bathtub was a little questionable, but nothing a pair of shower shoes couldn't fix. Also while some staff members were less than pleasant or helpful it did not put a damper on our experience. Overall, an excellent value for a great location. We will stay here next time we visit.

Vacation with boyfriend

First impression not good! Problems with check-in. The staff in the reception claimed that we hadn`t paid for the stay - even though we had our documents and receipt. He told us to call our travel agency and then gave us a note with the cost for the stay. Not willing to help at all! When we got in contact with the travel agency the staff in the reception refused to talk to them. The agency had to call the hotel themselves. Luckily the agency sorted it out for us. Generally we did not found the staff accomodating and friendly. The cleaning of the room was ok. We got new towels everyday. No hair-dryer as it said in our booking documents - it was destroyed. Smell of mildew. The rooms are old and need to be refurbished a bit. But this was not important to us as we didnt stay much of our time in the room. There is wifi in the hotel, but you have to pay for it. The location is perfect! 10 - 15 minutes walk to Times Square and Empire State building. The subway is right outside the hotel, across the street! Penn Station is also right across the street. You can take the train to Newark Airport from here. We will recommend this hotel to people who want a perfect location and dont care about the standard of the room. And it is really cheap compared to other hotels.

NYC Cheap

Don't be fooled by the two star review. Yes, this is an old hotel, possibly late 30's early 40's, so it looks rundown compared to newer buildings. But, the location in mid-town is excellent. The rooms were clean, the staff helpful and polite. If you don't need vast amenities and just want a clean quiet place to sleep while you enjoy the rest of what New York City has to offer this is the hotel for you. One nit, wifi is not free unless you book directly with the hotel which makes the cost for the room go up. However, with a Starbucks practically every two blocks this problem is easily solved.
