Almost a divorce
First, the good things. The location is excellent since the west side subway is only a block away. Also, some sandwich shops are near by for a quick breakfast or lunch. The staff are friendly and helpful. Also, there were lots of students staying there, but we found the hotel very quiet. The divorce part is that I made a mistake when picking the hotel on the website and did not notice that the room had a shared bath. My wife was NOT happy. As it turned out, we did not have to fight anyone for access to the bath , and the bath was bright and clean and obviously updated within the last few years. So, overall, an efficient and cheap place to stay, but don't go there for a romantic weekend, unless you opt to pay more for bath in your room. I do believe the "shared bath" should be flagged to avoid other people making the mistake I made.

Time-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Subway is one block away. $30 unlimited ticket (for 7 days) may be a bargain, but contrary to what I read on some website, it can be used by only one person. Two people can't travel on it.

Couples getaway
It was a good experience, not necessarily the best. Older hotel. You just have to make sure that you purchase a room that comes with a bathroom in the room! and not down the hallway. We did not know that!

Safe, clean, 15 minutes from Times Square
Staff is friendly and the room was perfectly clean. An old hotel-- Though modernized and up to date furnishings, doesn't have perfect AC/heat but with windows open a crack, we were very comfortable. Safe neighborhood with wonderful diners next door. Across the street corner from a subway stop, so we never took a cab.

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
We enjoyed the free ride on Staten Island ferry-- Great view of Statue of Liberty at night and Manhattan Island views! Hopped the bus from the ferry to our hotel. Though almost an hour ride, it was safe at night and took us past Herald Square, Radio City, etc!

Fantastic location, friendly staff and decent sized rooms. The only draw back was one slow elevator.

Great upper west side hotel
When I first arrived, there was a mixup and they put me in a single rather than the deluxe double queen that I had reserved. The first room was tiny, but the problem was fixed immediately. My double was spacious and very clean. It could have used some updating, but I was not worried about that. I was very pleased to have a refrigerator and a microwave in the room. There are plenty of grocery and convenience stores close by, so I was able to keep beverages in the room. The Hotel also is right by the 96th street subway stop, which is an express stop and is very convenient. Other good things include good restaurants within walking distance, a friendly staff, and a fairly safe neighborhood. A few issues to note: it is an older building, so there is only one elevator and it can be slow. On the upper floors be prepared to hear the wind whipping around the building. Sounds like moaning. Finally, the mattresses are a bit firm for my tastes. I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Newton and would stay there again.

Short drive from hotel
Times Square is two Express stops down. Then walk to 47th St. & Broadway to the TKTS booth to get same day discount theater tickets. Booth opens at 2 pm. There is also an app that gives you real time listings of what they have or what they had yesterday if the Book is not open yet.

Would definitely stay again
I was very favorably impressed. The location is terrific, rooms clean, everything in good shape, staff nice. Of course a larger room would have been better, but for the price, no complaints (except Internet code didn't work).

Remember: this IS New York--
Yes--the rooms are not terribly spacious. And yes, you may hear some street noise you don't hear back home. And yes, the elevator is slow. BUT remember--this is New York. Our room (we stayed five nights) was very comfortable; the bed was a little on the hard side--but there were extra pillows in the closet. There was a microwave, a coffee maker and a small fridge--along with a nice flat screened TV. There were plenty of over head lights--most with dimmers. The bathroom's are small--but (refer to title) there was a tub, and yes, it was a small tub (refer to title) but everything was super clean. The subway could not be closer, there's a Starbucks across the street and a Duane Reede two doors down. Also--the next door diner serves room service, and the diner itself is super. Thai food is also within a stone's throw. All in all--a great New York find. It deserves more than the three stars it has. If I could, I'd probably give it 3.75 stars--but at the price we paid--it deserves a full five.

A gem right off the Subway stop at W. 96th
The room was clean and ample, with a microwave and refrigerator -- I've paid twice as much for half-as-good accommodations in NYC. The location was an easy hop on the Red Line to mid-town and Greenwich Village, but the best aspect was the staff, from the cleaning women to Charles at the front desk. My plane brought me in early, and I was allowed to check-in early too, with no fuss. I will be returning with my family later this year.

Take half you restaurant meal back to the fridge in your room. The big serving sizes mean you can lop off a chunk of your meal costs this way.
