Wonderful three day getaway
My boyfriend and I stayed two nights at Hotel Mela and LOVED it! We will definitely stay there again! The location was absolutely perfect - practically right in the heart of Times Square. Staff was very nice and helpful. The room itself was not as small as I was expecting for a hotel in NYC. Very clean and classy. Definitely a great value!

Hotel Mela for Thanksgiving Weekend
Hotel Mela is a nice hotel, but not so fantastic I'd write home about it. Location is perfect, less than one block from the heart of Time Square, one block from the subway and a short walk to Rockefeller. Our room was probably the smallest room I've had in a while, but that's what could be expected in NY; it was orderly and clean. Upon first entry into the room, it smelled like mothballs but that dissipated with time. About halfway through the stay, a different smell began coming from the AC unit (mildew, almost a urine smell) but it dissipated as well when I left the fan on in the AC unit. Overall, everything functioned well in the room, staff was attentive and it was a great location. And really, on a trip to NYC, how long do you expect to spend inside your hotel room.

Where's the rest of my furniture?
Great location. Rooms and lobby are small (aka boutique) but look good. Everything works, and the staff is good. Problem? The standard single room has space for a chair at the least and maybe a small desk, but has neither. The bed is the only place to sit. Better values a few blocks away.

Literally a half block from Times Square
We were looking for a terrific location so we could walk to shows, walk to shopping, walk to good eating, etc. This was it! Friendly, helpful staff. Very tiny room, but we did ask for a king sized bed and got it. It doesn't have a restaurant but there are nice restaurants next door and across the street. There was no view from our window, but we weren't there to spend five days in the room, anyway.

Time-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
We recommend taking a double-decker city bus tour first thing, getting a feel for distances in Manhattan so you can plan your days. That bus stop, the last minute (discounted) ticket office for all Broadway shows, as well as a NYC tourist information center, are only a block from Hotel Mela.

Good enough
I arrived at 1 pm. The front desk couldn't find my reservation when I arrived. I needed to pull up my confirmation number, and even then they couldn't find it, because it hadn't yet been manually entered into their system. They couldn't give me a room then, since check in time was 3 pm. The room was small but comfortable, but there was no place to work--no desk, no flat surface to open my computer, no chair, so I had to sit in bed with my computer on my lap. There is a small business center downstairs, as well as a tiny lobby where I could have worked instead, and did later on. Location is first rate. Staff was friendly. Price was right.

Let Down[...] Hotel Mela
[...].Relating to Hotel Mela, it was clean and the service was good. It had a great location just a block away from Times Square. Walking distance to good food, theater, night life, and shopping. However, the Hotel room I booked was classified as "Premier". When I arrived I was surprised to see the smallest room I have ever stayed in. It literally only had room to walk around the bed. No desk, couch, chair, table, anything. Just a queen bed with room to walk around it barely. It was clean and neat, but very small. Then I parked my own SUV. They had told me on the phone that Va lay parking was an extra $10.00 so it was $40.00 per night for an SUV if I parked it and $50.00 if they did. Well I parked it myself and was still charged $50.00 per night. So all-in-all is wasn't a bad experience, just some unexpected hassles I didn't need. If you are traveling on business and need a desk this wouldn't be the room.

Hotel was clean, staff very friendly. [...]and the hotel had told us we could get a king-sized bed, upon arrival we were told "no". Room was consistently "set up" for one person so we had to call down alot to get supplies for 2.

Not as expected.
I reserved an Executive King Room [...]-- I even called the hotel in late February to verify I had the Executive King. An employee naned [...] confirmed that I did. When we checked in, I was told I had been "upgraded" to an Executive Queen. (Upgraded? I believe I reserved it.) Staff unable to give us a King, but they did offer us a cot for my daughter. Since when is a handicapped accessible room considered an "Executive Queen"? Only in New York? Also, I asked for a replacement lightbulb for the floor lamp within 10 minutes of our arrival. Man who delivered the cot told me he had to contact "Engineering" for a lightbulb-- we never saw an "engineer" during our stay. However, housekeepers were very cordial and helpful, as were the bellhops.

Lazzara's Pizza in Hell's Kitchen is worth the 10 minute walk from the hotel-- thin crust and delicious toppings. This tiny restaurant will make your room at Hotel Mela feel huge!

Hotel Mela - NYC
The room was very clean and in a great location (down the street from Times Square). Disappointed we were on a smoking floor in a smoking room when I requested non-smoking. I was told we could move to another room the next day. Also, the room temp was very hard to control (at 69 the room was very warm but turn it down one degree cooler air would blow out and the room was freezing). I do not think the temp was reading correctly. Also, room incredibly small which is typical for NYC tho. One interesting thing happened when we left. The bellhop asked if he could hail us a cab to the airport. He disappeared and we stepped outside and hailed a cab on our own. When we got in the cab the cabbie said there is a guy down the street from the hotel asking for $3 to give him a fare to the airport!

Not a luxury Hotel
I would not call this a luxury hotel at all, but it was decent for the price. Rooms were kind of small...there's a reason why the only the bed appears in any of the photos. There was no closet, just a nook in the side of the room with a place to hang your clothes. Definitely not the best use of space as there were no drawers or cabinets in the main room. Found it a little strange that the bathroom was pretty big and had ABSOLUTELY NO counter space....I had no where to apply makeup and had to keep running into the main room to get essentials. Lastly on the bathroom, and probably worst of all, the best I could get was a semi-lukewarm shower to knock off the NYC grime. I can't wait to go home and take a nice long hot shower! The lighting in the room left a lot to be desired. There was one small window that strangely offered no light or outside view. The in-room lighting still left the room pretty dark. Be sure to avoid getting a room on the second floor as the hotel staff seem to congregate there early in the morning and throughout the day and they were EXTREMELY loud!! Also, the tiny fitness room is on the second fllor and you can actually here people setting the settings on the treadmill from your room with the door closed. I don't think I got a good nights sleep the whole time I was there. The location was good. Short cab ride to trendy spots in town and 5th Ave shopping. Times Sq was pretty lively but don't look for any decent non-chain restaurants within 3 or 4 blocks of hotel. Rooms and lobby were very clean, staff was friendly. Don't expect much from the concierge in terms of recommendations...I had better luck looking for places via my cell phone apps. All in all, decent for the price. I'd give it a 3-star rating...certainly not luxury. Definitely not worth 4-star pricing.
