Simple & authentic
Hotel 17 was what I expected, which was a classic, authentic NYC hotel. Was quiet & simple, which met our needs as we did not want to spend much time in the room anyway~not why you visit NYC! Shared bathrooms were not a problem & everything was really dated, but clean. Walking distance, easily, to Union Square & has a 24 cafe one block up. Would have enjoyed an in-room fridge or at least a drink machine in the hotel, but otherwise, was fine

Fantastic value
Let's be realistic here, you're not going to get a five star hotel in Manhattan for the same price as Hotel 17, so immediately you have to live with the fact that your stay will lack some amenities and excessive comforts. However, do not let the photos of Hotel 17 fool you. At first glance from the photos, we thought we would be staying in a room that resembled Del Boy's bedroom from Only Fools & Horses, but in reality it was perfectly comfortable and served as a perfect base for our excursions into Manhattan. For the price, you can't get cheaper without staying in China Town or a slightly dodgier area in Manhattan. The shared bathroom is probably very daunting to a lot of potential guests. For my friend and I (both being male) it wasn't particularly a big deal, the only annoying part was to have to get dressed in the middle of the night just to nip to the bathroom. In regards to 'rush hour traffic' in the bathroom and shower facilities, we had no problems. We had to wait a maximum of ten minutes for our turn. Furthermore, the bathrooms (there are two per section of ten rooms) were cleaned daily. The staff at reception were average. They weren't great, but they weren't rude. Though as I've said already you can't expect a hotel for the price to be jumping through hoops for you. On arrival my friend and I were given a room with one double bed, a slight problem! After returning to reception and explaining that we in fact didn't swing 'that way', they swapped us over to a twin room with no hassle. But kudos for not being judgmental, Hotel 17! Overall, we had a fantastic stay at Hotel 17. For the price it's a no-brainer. A few basic facts. The hotel is located a three minute walk from Union Square subway station. The subway line serves most of the tourists destinations, notably only three stops from Times Square. Taxi fares are a flat rate of 58 bucks from JFK airport to the hotel and there are a few nice places for breakfast, meals and drinks very nearby - notably "Duke's", an Irish sports bar located on 15th Street with incredibly friendly staff and owners.

5 Day trip
If you have never seen new York before like us, Hotel 17 is really adequate. The worst thing is that you have to share the bathroom, however it is located near favorable places to eat and you can reach a subway station in 10 minutes. Overall we would recommend this hotel.

Great location
When it comes to hotels what do you use them for? For most somewhere to sleep? It may not have a restaurant, a gym or a spa but unless you plan on spending your who holiday in your hotel why would you need any of them? For those of you who are like myself and want to spend your holiday exploring the city, seeing the sites and everything else anyone would visit NYC for Hotel 17 is perfectly located. 3 blocks from one of the main subway stations (Union Square) with trains going to just about anywhere you need to get to and where it doesn't on train change at another station onroute and your there! While at the same time being in a quiet area away from noise, hustle and bustle why stay anywhere else. I've been to NYC twice before and each time I was a good distance from anywhere I wanted to get to where as being so close to Union square everything outside of Union square was more or less the same distance be it uptown or downtown.
