Great hotel & location
Good location, good service and rooms really clean. The only thing you don't have to do is to contract services with the concierge. The rest is great !

Decent Budget Option
I'll start by saying that I used to live in NY and was going back to visit. Hence, I was only looking for a place to keep my stuff and sleep at night; I was not planning on spending any significant time at the hotel. It was with these requirements that I found the Gershwin. Hotels in NY are either crazy expensive ($350+) or "cheap" hostels in questionable parts of the city. There are very few "reasonably" priced places that aren't hostels and in a good location. I got a room for under $200 per night, which I think is fair for what you get. Location: The Gershwin is in a great location in terms of getting around easily. It's right in midtown, only a couple of blocks away from the 4,5,6 lines to the east and the N,R,Q lines to the west. If you aren't familiar with NY, you can pretty much get to any part of the city you want on these lines, which is a nice alternative if you don't want to cab it everywhere. It's also walking distance to plenty of shopping, food, and bars. You can stay within 4 block radius and get everything you would need. Room: The hotel is an old apartment building that they obviously renovated and turned into a hotel. As such, the rooms are pretty small by US standards. There's room for a bed, a couple of chairs and a table, and a couple of regular size suitcases. If you're looking for somewhere to spread out or have more than two people, this ain't it (at least not in the standard room). This wasn't an issue for me and my lady, but just something to point out. The bathroom was pretty tiny (definitely one at a time in there), and the door didn't close all the way. Overall everything was pretty old and just painted over. But it was all clean, which is the most important thing to me. Hotel & Service: The street the hotel is located on is surprisingly quiet for being in the middle of Manhattan. Now, if you're not from a big city you'll think it's pretty noisy. But trust me when I tell you that it's WAY better than most parts of the city. The only way you won't hear anything from the street is if you stay at a high rise somewhere. The staff was friendly and helpful. There's only one small elevator, and it's pretty slow. If you get caught during a busy time, you could be waiting for quite a while. But the do have stairs open, so you can skip it if you're on a lower floor. There's a cafe in the lobby that seems pretty happening as well. They also have an airport shuttle that leaves hourly if you make a reservation. I didn't use it because it's easy to grab a cab, but it's an option. Overall I'd say this is a good option if you're trying to keep to a budget and aren't planning on spending a ton of time in the room. You can't beat the location. Just look for a decent price before booking.

You get what you pay for
The Gershwin was about a 3/10 on my scale. I have stayed at really nice and really terrible hotels and this one was definitely more on the terrible side. I checked in at 9:00 having and early flight to NYC. Upon arrival I was told I would be able to check in early to get some much needed rest. When I called a few hours later to try to check in they told me normal check in times. I then waited 30 minutes after check in time to get into my room. The room did not look anything like the pictures and smelled like straight bleach. The walls were paper thin which did not help the loud maids and construction that was going on all day. The shower had 2 tempatures, extremely hot and cold. I also had to get rid of a few roaches in the middle of the night. Not a place I would stay again. On the bright side the location was okay.

An inexpensive central location
Price and location were right for someone on the rounds of the city from morning till night, who only needed a room to sleep. Room was small but clean, sparse in furnishings. Bathroom very compact but hot water was plentiful. Small coffee shop off the funky lobby. Looks like some renovations were underway to expand lobby. Desk staff were young and sincerely friendly. Concierge was not functional despite his presence.

Attend MOMA on the free admission night, after 5:30. Don't be intimidated by the crowd, the line for free tickets moves rapidly once admitted

Great
Don't know why people have given this hotel a bad review. Couldn't have been better, location was excellent , staff were very helpful , room was spacious and cleaned everyday. What more could you want. Would stay here again anytime. You don't go to newyork for a hotel you go to see a city, somewhere to put your head between the walking and that's what this place is. It's beautiful and quirky aswell. Very simple, want somewhere better. Pay more.

get away
I had a pleasant experience. The water in the shower was not consistent. Either very Hot or very Cold.... To check in before 3pm and the room ready, they charge an extra $30.00. Other than that it was a good experience.

Good deal for a short trip
Our overall visit with this hotel was great. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The valet is expensive but that was expected. There is a great cafe with reasonable prices located in the lobby that does room service. We had breakfast their both days and enjoyed it. We were walking distance from everything which made it easy to get around for our first time there. The only down fall was the furniture was old, made to look Art Deco like and the bed moved when you rolled over. The sound proof of the rooms wasn't all the good either. We weren't in the room much but if you wanted something more private this isn't the place. For our trip purposes it was a great stay and I would definitely stay there again.
