If you can't afford the Ritz
We've stayed here before. The neighbor hood is real NYC. It's convenient to all areas. Not much to look at but clean, comfortable and the Empire State building lit up at night outside our window.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Eataly is a very short walk downtown, a couple of blocks, for the best hot chocolate, paninis and goodies, even dinner if you want. An italian food paradise.

for what I got, I would've paid more.
Considering location, room quality, options, this place is awesome and very cost-efficient. I've stayed previously in NYC twice, once a 3-star hotel near Central Park, and once a 3-star hotel in the Financial District. Neither comes close to this. It's a block away from the subway if you're going far, but it's got many things nearby as well. It's Midtown so you have options. As it was a 3-star hotel, I thought it'd be the same as the previous hotels but it wasn't. It far cleaner, nicer, and the walls never seemed outdated. I don't know but I feel like it must've gone through renovations recently because everything just feels new. Though, the stay would've been more enjoyable if the girl I brought along wasn't such a drama queen/teaser but it was good that I found out before I got any farther with her.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
It takes a bit extra time, but learn the subway system. The first time I went there, I think in just a weekend, I dropped ~$150 trying to go everywhere I wanted by Taxi. Learn the subway system and use it.

Good deal for New York
Our room was pretty large and the bed was comfortable. Good location to walk or take the subway. Not a very pretty entrance or neighborhood, but we felt safe and it was convenient.

well run well priced well located
Very helpful front desk staff. Lovely rooms with very recent renovation updates.Quite nice & free continental breakfast in the mornings and also 24/7 single serve coffee machine on 4th floor. Light sleepers should watch out for floor 8, where several of the rooms border the engine for one of the elevators, and so one can hear a regular whirring noise--not that loud, but it can be distracting if you're trying to fall asleep. We first got put into one of these, but upon letting the front desk know that we needed a quieter room, were promptly moved to another excellent room. The immediate area is a bit less fancy than some parts of New York, but the location is great--walking distance from PEnn Station, nearby to the red, yellow and green metro lines, smack in midtown so it is easy and quick to get downtown or uptown.
