Not again

This place was the pits, It's in a prime location however I've seen funeral homes look better. As for the room the windows were open which was an issue seeing how its the ground floor and in the Bronx. Wtf. Also the sheets were dirty with cigarette burns and even hair. I asked the staff to changed the sheets I was promised at 10pm however when I got back to the room at 3am it still was not done. Complained and finally it was completed. This hotel needs to be striked from existence.

Second Go round

This was my second time at Howard Johnson express. I stayed at hotel the first time in 11/12. Most recent stay 2/13. Hotel is not located in greatest area but is very accessable via subway and bus.. The room was clean but the satelite in tv is the worst. The signal is lost frequently. This occurred both times during each stay. While the hotel and room is clean staff does not pay attention to detail. Eg replacement of cups napkins etc. Last I think they need better extermination. Both stays I encountered things which should not be in a well known brand hotel.

Alright, but bring some ear plugs

Came here twice to stay the night prior to an interview in the bronx. The rooms are large and clean, and the bed is comfortable. BUT the noise from the train is bothersome, and on my second night the smoke alarm low battery warning (with a loud voce saying "your battery is low" awoke me from sleep several times.. Also in the newyork winter it would be nice to have a more substantial blanket than the one provided. I was cold on the first stay, but realised how to operate the heater in the room for the second. The neighbourhood is not one in which you would take a midnight stroll and even the liqour store over the road has closed due to ?? poor foot traffic/lack of business. Taxis ordered for me were prompt and courteous.

I recently stayed at Howard Johnson Queens, and this is such a contrast from there! 1. Room was very clean. Bed sheets was very clean. 2. Room was very spacious. No funny smells 3. Bathroom was clean, looked newly renovated, and spacious.

Horrible

The rugs in the room were sticky and all stained up. They didn't gave us one wash cloth, didnt clean the room well at all. Went down stairs in the morning to get my 1yr old some orange juice the machine wasn't working when I asked about it she said "oh I don't think you want that." Then turned it on pushed the button the juice was old and thick just Absoulty disgusting. NEVER NEVER staying there again!!!

Did not feel safe

I traveled to NYC with my 17 year old son to visit a couple of colleges. Although we were on a budget, I should have chose a better location. We arrived at the hotel at night and it is in an economically depressed area. I did not feel that we were able to come out of our hotel room and walk to Mc Donalds, or to one of the stores that were nearby. The room was ok, better than I expected. In the morning we walked down to the subway, which was less than a block away and went into Manhattan. The only thing that this hotel has going for it is its proximity to the subway. If you are on a tight budget, this place might be a possibility but, everything that you need for the night, take it in with you. I would not venture out alone into the neighborhood.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

take the train into Manhattan, it is less than a half block from the hotel. I took a cab to the hotel from Manhattan and it was almost $40.00. My son and I rode the subway back to Manhattan the next day for less than $8.00

Terrible experience. Never stay here!!!!! is a nightmare!!

The staff was beyond unfriendly and unprofessional. The TV in my room did not work so well..constantly had to unplug the thing and plug it back in to get it to work. The hotel is situated in one of the roughest areas of New York, very crime ridden location. The hotel is not secure at all. There was no elevator but three floors. When I checked back into my room in the night, the maid hadn’t cleaned my room at all, the bed wasn’t made, none of my towels had been replaced and I was even out of toilet paper. Toilets not flushing. By morning I went to iron my cloth and it tripped the circuit breaker in my room. So I just scrambled to pack up all my things in the dark and went home with a terrible experience in my mind. I'm surprised Howard Johnson hasn't pulled their name from this establishment. I don't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.

Nice stay for area

The hotel was fine. It was clean. The staff would have been better if they spoke better english, but if you just want a clean place to stay, its fine. Not really any amenities but we were not looking for that.

Very close to subway, very affordable in New York

The hotel is walking distance from the subway station. It's great if you want to go to the city for a day or two. It does take you 40-50 mins to go to the city from the hotel. Everything about the hotel is acceptable, the room, continental breakfast, staff. The surrounding area is OK, not great. No restaurants in walking distance, but you can get decent food delivered. The best thing is that it's one of the most affordable and nicely connected hotels around NY.

U get what U pay 4

I guess you get what you pay for. It was a good deal but the toilet didn't flush well, the iron had the plug ripped off so it couldn't be used, the free breakfast was only bread (to toast) and apples, we could hear the sub way every time it went by, etc. The guest clerk was nice enough but he didn't know anything and just wasn't a help at all. There were no restaurants close by to eat. But the good news is that we only slept there and the subway was very convenient!.
