away from it, yet close to it

the hotel was close enough to the strip that my wife and I could enjoy the sights and street shows, but far enough away from the larger casinos that we werent swamped with other tourists. got the bus ticket for the strip and we just hopped on and off when we wanted to see a sight or just walk.

Affordable Comfort

While the rooms and room views are relatively no-frills, the casino had an active weekend pool area, and great off-peak time food and beverage specials. The ribs at McCall's were great! Largest drawback is that it is best to have a car or use shuttle service, because both the main part of the Strip and Downtown are each long walks away. I drove rather than even thinking of walking those distances (even though I am active and was hiking outside Vegas both weekend days I was there).

Waiting in long lines is not fun

My hotel was The Stratosphere and my trusty GPS got me there quickly and with no problems. Again an interminable wait to check in - over three quarters of an hour standing in line for the front desk. The room was nice and clean and was what should be expected for a decent hotel. I stayed in 7051 which was accessed by the "special" elevators. I was told that the room was recently upgraded and it was nice. I do pushups on the floor and the worst thing I noticed was that the corners where the furniture met the carpet had dirt that was not vacuumed - a common occurrence where maids do not use a nozzle and expect the carpet attachment to clean up close to furniture. The toilet was a Gerber power flush model and occasionally the handle had to be jiggled to stop it from running. I called the front desk for a couple issues and about half the time they were very slow (over ten minutes) to pick up. The room had a view of the parking garage and that was fine because it was quiet. I went to the top of the tower and the view was great. There are some rides where you can dangle over the edge, drop to the ground, & etc. It was worth the wait to see the view. I ate most of my meals in the hotel and the Roxy was good for an early breakfast - I found it too noisy and too bright - but when I sat further away from the ramp to the next level (deep in the restaurant) it was better for my sensibilities. I had a couple meals at McCall's Grill and the food was good. The French onion soup was wonderful. It was a good escape from the hustle and bustle of the hotel / casino. Until the very last day of my trip I did not know that there was a McDonalds on the second floor (R for retail on the elevator control) and made the mistake of driving to the nearest McDonalds for breakfast one of the days of the trade show where there were street people sitting around the entrance begging for handouts - not what I expected or wanted. I attended The Inventor's Showcase at The National Hardware Show which was just down the road from The Stratosphere - about a five minute drive and very convenient for the Convention Center. The show was huge and I met a lot of nice people there and had a great time exhibiting my inventions. Checking out of the hotel was fast after I found the "quick check out" fellow who did nothing to call attention to himself over in the corner. Several of us were in line with the new arrivals and it would have taken an hour for us to get through the line. Fortunately a person who had been there before told us about the expedited check out.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

While in Las Vegas I visited Hoover Dam - it was very worthwhile - about a thirty minute drive North from the hotel. There is a new bridge just downriver from the Dam that was completed in 2012 that has an Interstate Highway as well as a pedestrian lane with a fantastic view of the Dam. I also visited Red Rock Canyon - another very worthwhile destination - about a twenty minute drive West from the hotel. The Canyon has a thirteen mile long paved loop that takes about thirty five minute to drive around and cost $7 to enter. Day hiking and rock climbing is allowed and if I had had the time and had been dressed appropriately I would have certainly gone for a stroll. The loop is also opened to bicycles but not dogs. Both attractions are very much worth visiting if you go to Las Vegas. Red Rock Canyon seemed unearthly and very cartoonish - I can't describe it adequately other than it is a "must see."

Not to bad

The hotel is fun and lots of things to do. But the staff is not very friendly and not helpful at all. It took the manager to walk by before the lady at the desk would be nice and figure out how to help us. Other than that it was a great time if you're looking for a hotel a little off the strip.

Good place if your here for pleasure

We were here for the weekend for a concert. We were happy about the stay. Majority of the time we were out and only stood in the room when it was time to sleep. Check in was quick. Staff was friendly. I would stay again if we are coming for one or two nights.
