Historic, European-style hotel in Uptown Charlotte since 1929

The genteel look and feel of The Dunhill Hotel has welcomed Uptown Charlotte guests for 80 years. Its 10 stories are a rare historic landmark from that period, renowned for elegant accommodations. Formal but not stuffy, the hotel teems with 18-century European furnishings and hand-sewn draperies. Cozy rooms charm with four-poster beds. Periodic restorations have kept the Dunhill a favorite for nice, quiet rooms within walking distance to downtown Charlotte attractions. Look for its flourish of neo-classical architecture amid the city skyline.

Highlights

  • Uptown boutique hotel in the heart of the arts and culture district
  • Elegant rooms, some with four-poster beds
  • Convenient to shops, businesses and nightlife, plus light rail line and free trolley
  • On-site Asbury Restaurant and limited room service
  • Transportation in a London Taxi available by appointment within a two-mile radius

Location
In the heart of the arts and cultural district, Discovery Place science museum, the Mint Museum, Spirit Square Center for the Arts and Blumenthal Performing Arts Center are all within walking distance of The Dunhill Hotel. Charlotte banking and financial headquarters are conveniently close for those on business. Also nearby are the Time Warner Cable Arena, Bank of America Stadium, NASCAR Hall of Fame and Charlotte Convention Center.
Rooms
Intimate rooms reflect the bygone era of the 18th century with a writing desk, antique and classic accents and an armoire. Modern conveniences, discreetly infused into the traditional atmosphere, include flat-screen televisions with satellite channels, CD players or iPod docking stations, voicemail, free Wi-FI, refrigerators stocked with complimentary beverages, and marble bathrooms with lavish bath amenities and bathrobes. Drift off on a new pillow-top mattress with hypo-allergenic bedding after turndown service leaves signature chocolates. Wedding-night couples who reserve the lavish Penthouse Suite love photos on the balcony.
Features

Designed by architect Louis Asbury- Sr., The Dunhill Hotel opened in 1929 as the fashionable Mayfair Manor apartment hotel. With permanent wealthy tenants renting half of the original rooms, the hotel thrived even during the Great Depression. Designated a Historic Hotel of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this authentic and understated retreat is a class act. It's also Charlotte's only member of Historic Hotels of America. Enjoy valet parking (fees apply), fresh coffee in the lobby and the Asbury Restaurant. No wonder Paul McCartney, Morgan Fairchild, Sinbad, and Tony Bennett have booked the Penthouse Suite.

Dining

The Asbury

At The Asbury, Chef Coleman creates menus and meals that are uniquely Carolinian: modern but rustic, evolving but still rooted in classics, southern and welcoming. There is a strong tie to heirloom ingredients native to our area, lost to time and modernization, as well as specialty items grown by small, family farms throughout the region. Chef Coleman searches out the best quality he can find, much of it coming from within the local region.

Dunhill in the heart of Charlotte

This was great find. Right in the center of the city and everything was walk able from this historic hotel at our recent stay for friends wedding, The rooms were not spacious as new hotels but this did not detract at all from the stay there. The customer service was excellent at all levels. The breakfast was light and very good, The farm to table restaurant in the hotel was outstanding. Get off the beaten track and try this old school residence.

Wanted to love it, but didn't

This has all the makings of a great boutique hotel. Alas, it is too dated to be comfortable.

Charming, convenient, and take the English Taxi!

The Dunhill is a "historic" hotel in downtown Charlotte, easy walking distance to the basketball arena, main library, museums, Overstreet Mall, etc. We got an upgraded room (I think "Elegant Queen") but it's still not very big, although between the huge wardrobe/entertainment center and coat nook there is plenty of storage. Also a couch, desk and coffee table. Bathroom is small but functional. Hair dryer, iron & board, mini-fridge with free soda that gets restocked. Highlight of the stay was using the hotel's car service - an English Taxi with "suicide doors" and massive legroom. The driver Michael is a delight. We were in town attending the Great Gatsby Gala event and between the heat and humidity and high heels and evening wear, it was great to be escorted to the Gala in air-conditioned comfort! Continental breakfast is included as well. The lobby has an elegant 20s/30s vibe and the bartender (Tim?) will mix you up a custom confection if you don't want to sample a fine local craft beer. And as an independent property, the Dunhill is "promo code eligible" for bookings! Definitely recommended.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Two doors down from Dunhill is The Wooden Vine. Calling it a "wine bar" is to sell it short, as its chef Nicholas puts together some outstanding dishes.

Classy, not sassy

We were very pleased with the location, friendliness of the staff, room arrangements and cleanliness, and overall atmosphere (historically elegant without overt pretentiousness). Will absolutely return soon for future date nights in the city.

Great location

This hotel was great! The only downfall was that the bed was a little old so it creaked and we sunk to the middle. Other than that though, we were very happy with our stay.

I really like the feel and food of this hotel

The Dunhill is a small - quiet hotel with well comfortable rooms - a perfect location - great food - warm and friendly service - a great local reputation. Their restaurant takes pride in local sourcing their food - and providing a little taste of something different - along with standard faire. Try their spicy fried chicken sandwich. Unlike chain hotels - their rooms vary in size and shape. I have stayed in several and have always been pleased. Amenities are just fine. The staff is responsive, warm and friendly - some of them have clearly been there for many years - some quite young - they were all cheerful and helpful. The location could not be better - all of downtown Charlotte is within easy walking distance - museums - restaurants and sporting venues just a stones throw away. I really really like this place and recommend it to anyone looking for a break from cookie cutter chains.
