Historic, European-style hotel in Uptown Charlotte since 1929

The genteel look and feel of The Dunhill Hotel has welcomed Uptown Charlotte guests for 80 years. Its 10 stories are a rare historic landmark from that period, renowned for elegant accommodations. Formal but not stuffy, the hotel teems with 18-century European furnishings and hand-sewn draperies. Cozy rooms charm with four-poster beds. Periodic restorations have kept the Dunhill a favorite for nice, quiet rooms within walking distance to downtown Charlotte attractions. Look for its flourish of neo-classical architecture amid the city skyline.

Highlights

  • Uptown boutique hotel in the heart of the arts and culture district
  • Elegant rooms, some with four-poster beds
  • Convenient to shops, businesses and nightlife, plus light rail line and free trolley
  • On-site Asbury Restaurant and limited room service
  • Transportation in a London Taxi available by appointment within a two-mile radius

Location
In the heart of the arts and cultural district, Discovery Place science museum, the Mint Museum, Spirit Square Center for the Arts and Blumenthal Performing Arts Center are all within walking distance of The Dunhill Hotel. Charlotte banking and financial headquarters are conveniently close for those on business. Also nearby are the Time Warner Cable Arena, Bank of America Stadium, NASCAR Hall of Fame and Charlotte Convention Center.
Rooms
Intimate rooms reflect the bygone era of the 18th century with a writing desk, antique and classic accents and an armoire. Modern conveniences, discreetly infused into the traditional atmosphere, include flat-screen televisions with satellite channels, CD players or iPod docking stations, voicemail, free Wi-FI, refrigerators stocked with complimentary beverages, and marble bathrooms with lavish bath amenities and bathrobes. Drift off on a new pillow-top mattress with hypo-allergenic bedding after turndown service leaves signature chocolates. Wedding-night couples who reserve the lavish Penthouse Suite love photos on the balcony.
Features

Designed by architect Louis Asbury- Sr., The Dunhill Hotel opened in 1929 as the fashionable Mayfair Manor apartment hotel. With permanent wealthy tenants renting half of the original rooms, the hotel thrived even during the Great Depression. Designated a Historic Hotel of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this authentic and understated retreat is a class act. It's also Charlotte's only member of Historic Hotels of America. Enjoy valet parking (fees apply), fresh coffee in the lobby and the Asbury Restaurant open all day. No wonder Paul McCartney, Morgan Fairchild, Sinbad, and Tony Bennett have booked the Penthouse Suite.

Dining

The Asbury
Under the direction of Executive Chef Chris Coleman, The Asbury is a modern southern restaurant that honors the past, celebrates the seasons, and looks forward. At The Asbury, Chef Coleman creates menus and meals that are uniquely Carolinian: modern but rustic, evolving but still rooted in classics, southern and welcoming. There is a strong tie to heirloom ingredients native to our area, lost to time and modernization, as well as specialty items grown by small, family farms throughout the region. Chef Coleman searches out the best quality he can find, much of it coming from within the local region.

5 star service in a killer location

This is a hotel that makes you feel like an important guest. The front desk staff is all about service, helping us make restaurant reservations and generally there to help in whatever way we needed. In the middle of the action. Clean comfortable rooms

Awesome

The room was perfect for me. The staff was awesome.. I had some specific request and the staff accommodated them without question. Bed was comfy - and from what I can tell, without some sort of forensic light - it was really clean! Not to mention the shuttle service in a really cool car - great old school manners and charm - made me feel like etiquette and service actually still exists in the service and consumer industry - thank you Dunhill - you have got it right! For the price you cannot ask for any more!!!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

1 block north - my favorite brewery - Rock Bottom. You can start in the hotel lobby and then make your way over to Rock Bottom - for a great reasonably priced meal and awesome beer (choose fire chief ale). Go south a couple of block the next night and choose the City Tavern - really you cannot go wrong in Charlotte! And the Dunhill is cozy, classic and classy.

Anniversary

Overall, I give it a 6.5 out of 10. I can appreciate the location of the hotel being so close to downtown, and I can appreciate the historical feel of the hotel itself. Most of the staff was helpful and at least moderately friendly. The HVAC system could use updating, as the air put out through thte ventilation system was either far too hot or far too cold. Though I personally reached out the hotel manager and requested advise on the room style to stay in, as well as to see if a corner room with a view would be possible, I was never responded to. I instead received a room with a view of the dirty rooftop next door to our hotel. One final disappointment would be that through my booking, I somehow was discredited the breakfast that is supposed to come with any room at The Dunhill. Upon my arrival, I requested I receive my voucher for my breakfast that I thought came with the room. Even though I had been in contact several times with the hotel staff, I was never informed that booking through another party removed my breakfast vouchers. This was agitating, as the cost of the room was maybe $6 cheaper than if I had booked though the hotel site. This was my greatest disappointment through the whole visit, as I feel it would have been nice to be informed in some manner that breakfast was not part of the package if booking through a different party. Through the reviews I had read and the comments seen, I expected a much more pleasurable stay for my first anniversary with my wife. I will stay at another hotel the next time I visit downtown Charlotte.

Historic hotel with terrific customer service

Great historic hotel in the heart of uptown Charlotte. The room was a little small without a bureau but it was adequate. The staff was very accomodating and pleasant from the housekeeping staff on up. There was no onsite gym or pool facility, so it made taking a break from working out for a few days justifiable. Every type and price point of restaurant is within a 5 minute walk from the front door; everything from a Subway sandwich shop to the elegant Capital Grille. Also, the hotel's own dining venue is quite good. Great southern hospitality.

I love the Dunhill Hotel!

This was my fifth stay at the Historic Dunhill Hotel. Even though the rooms are not huge, they are well appointed and laid out nicely. They hotel provides you complimentary bottled water and sodas in the in-room refrigerator, free in-room Keurig coffee, and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in the evenings at the lobby coffee service table near the front desk. I have yet to encounter one single member of the staff that is not accommodating, polite, and engaging. The only problem I have in staying at the Dunhill is that it has spoiled me for staying anywhere else when I travel. I highly recommend a stay while in Charlotte!

Breakfasts are incredible at the farm-to-table "Harvest Moon" restaurant located in the lobby (and often, vouchers for breakfast are included in the booking). If you order nothing else, YOU MUST HAVE THEIR LOCALLY RAISED AND SMOKED BACON!!! HEAVENLY!!!
