Downtown boutique hotel celebrates West Indian spirit in Creole City
The St. James Hotel honors the legend of West Indian immigrant and merchant, Che, who died in 1851 near the hotel. The portal opened by voodoo priestesses to guide his spirit to the Caribbean is said to have helped Civil War soldiers enter death peacefully. The St. James Hotel harkens to its Caribbean roots with elegant West Indian decor, brick and stone work, ornate iron work and lush plantings. Every room at this boutique hotel is slightly different.
Highlights
- Boutique hotel with West Indian flair
- Dipping pool and courtyard
- Pet friendly up to 30 pounds (fees apply)
Rooms
All 86 rooms and suites are comfortably outfitted with down feather beds and the usual array of in-room perks such as safes, coffee makers and hair dryers. What is not usual is the decor and room layout. Rooms vary in shape and design with Caribbean details such as painted designs of monkeys, parrots and palm trees. Marble baths and a cozy feel remind visitors why they chose a small, privately owned hotel over a chain. A pool and fourth floor sun terrace add appeal.
Features
New Orleans Magazine says Cuvee is among the best restaurants in town. The on-site restaurant boasts an impressive wine list and serves nouveau Creole and continental cuisine. A cavernous dining room is warmed by handiwork in wood, leather and iron. Lunch is served Monday to Friday, dinner Monday to Saturday. The hotel will help to arrange local tours.

Business Trip
My stay was quite comfortable, but the carpet had a large dark red stain in the middle of the floor that was somewhat disturbing. I put a towel over it each day I was there so I wouldn't feel like I was staying in a crime scene. However, the front desk staff were nice and the location was perfect.

Nice Enough Hotel
The staff were friendly enough but this hotel offers very little in the way of amenities. There is not a crumb of food available on premises - not even a vending machine. I was unprepared for the rain we had one day and asked if there was an umbrella I could borrow, no (not holding it against them just saying don't expect much in the way of services). The room was kept nice and clean and the bed was very comfortable. The curtains shut fully at night and I was able to get a really good night's sleep each night. The decor is a little dated. The nightstands and furniture a little bit dingy and older but not the worst I have seen. The location was very good and convenient to everything I need to do while there for a conference.

Rebecca was the best!
The hotel was in a great spot downtown, very near the french quarter making walking back and forth several times a day easy. Our room was nice, a little dark, but no big deal because we really went to New Orleans to see New Orleans and not hangout in our hotel room. With that said, however, each day after walking or biking around till 5 or so, we headed back to the hotel for a few drinks (we made ourselves with supplies picked up from the corner store) in the hotel's outside area and chatted with another couple staying at the hotel, and it was very pleasant. The real shiner was Rebecca, the front desk attendant that greeted us the day we arrived, and whom we saw everyday when we came back. Rebecca was super helpful, funny, and great spirited making our initial encounter with someone from New Orleans very memorable. Hats off to her!

Great Hotel, Great Location
I was a bit let down when we first got to St. James Hotel... The descriptions and pictures gave the impression that this was a unique, funky and different hotel. I guess due to renovations, the hotel now looks pretty much like any hotel... No interesting voodoo portals or West Indian influences so far as I could see. That said, everything was clean, staff was helpful and pleasant, and the location is fantastic if you are trying to be on that part of town. Never did find the standing pool they spoke of though..

Great, no frills place
Great for a nice clean hotel that is about a 10 minute walk from the heart of the quarter. Amenities wise, there's free wireless internet, but no breakfast or a gym.

First Mardi Gras Experience
Great and convenient for Mardi Gras festivities, but make sure you get there before parades begin because the hotel staff doesn't care to help you maneuver through closed streets, we were lost for over an hour.

Excellent Location
The hotel had a good price for it's location especially on Mardi Gras weekend. However the room was very small and it was hard to accommodate everyone into it. I have never used a valet before but because the streets were so busy I decided this would be my first time. It took over an hour to get my car back the next morning. I don't know if this is normal or even if the valet is connected to the hotel, but it kind of slowed down my plans.

Girls Adventure Weekend
My friend and I planned a last minute trip to NOLA, and we booked a double room at St. James. The hotel was small, only 3 floors, and it was very quiet. The room was small too, but for the two of us it was fine. The beds were amazingly comfortable. The bathroom was clean, the shower was kind of old and the water pressure wasn't that great. But the cleaning staff was thorough and they left us little bath and body works samples so that was a fun surprise! The only negative to the hotel was no free breakfast, but they do have free coffee in the lobby in the AM so that almost makes up for it :) The location was fantastic. We walked everywhere - River Walk shops, canal street, the french quarter. Very convenient location to pretty much everything in downtown NOLA.
