50th Birthday Celebration!

This is the 2nd time that we have stayed at this hotel. We just love it! Not a ton of amenities but for a weekend get-a-way this couldn't be in a better location for shopping, shows and attractions. The staff is so nice and really made our stay right on point the entire time. The Concierge staff remembered us from 5 years ago!

Overall Pleasant

The entrance is not on Michigan Ave, as the address suggest. I thank a previous Obitz review for that information. The room was small, but comfortable. The staff was very good. The towels did not smell freshly laundered and I would have liked hotter water. The Wi-Fi only being available in the lobby was disappointing. If you are considering this hotel and are sensitive to noise and light, remember that this is an older, but well maintained, building on a very busy street. Overall, pleasant.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Don't bring your car. Walking is downtown is much more fun and relaxing, not to mention less expensive. I flew into O'Hare and road the El-Train. $5 for the train and 1 hour. The cab ride can be $50 and you will spend the same amount of time in the car.

Beautiful location - mediocre experience

The reason I was underwhelmed with my stay at the Allerton has everything to do with my dining experience for breakfast. We waited 15 minutes to sit at a table and there were multiple tables open that could've sat our party of 5. When we were finally seated the hostess told us about the buffet and then asked if we still wanted to see menus, which we did. The menus never came; 20 minutes later I had to flag someone down to see a menu. We were running short on time at this point and we all agreed that if we now ordered off the menu we would have to wait too long, so we ate the buffet. The buffet was $20 and included slimy eggs, luke warm bacon/sausage, potatoes, cheese you'd find on a cheese tray and some unripe fruit. Oh, and at this point we had ordered water and no one had any water. The buffet wasn't worth the $20 and the service was poor. As for the rest of my experience, it was good. The staff that checked us in were very friendly and helpful and we actually were able to check I to out room a few hours early. The rooms were small but clean and it served our purpose.

without wi-fi, it is kind of a pain

the hotel did not provide free wi-fi which surprised me. And it does not provide free breakfast either. But since it is located at the center of the city, and I agree that it is the cheapest one, so if you don't mind and simply want to save money, this is the one you can choose. Very convenient.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There are quite a bit great restaurant around, but they are a little bit pricy. And if you are going there on Thanksgiving or other holidays like that, be prepared to either spend a lot in a wonderful restaurant or couldn't find any place to eat. (except for China town)

The room was small, but the location was excellent

I took advantage of the your offer of free wifi, and printed out the offer on a piece of paper. On check in the women looked at me like I was making things up, and then said, "OK I'll give it to you," like she was doing me a big favor. No coffee in the room. (It's in the lobby, at specific time in the morning.) this is a little annoying.

Nice, Convenient Hotel with Few Things Missing

The Allerton Hotel is wonderfully located. It is in the process of refurbishment due to a new company taking over. It was a nice room, quiet, in many ways a perfect stay. However, since I am not a coffee drinker, I asked 2 days in a row in there were any tea available for purchase. Each day I was told "no." Every morning they serve complimentary coffee in the lobby area so I couldn't understand why a pot of hot water, some tea bags weren't available. The lobby restaurant was also not open for dinner which was strange. A staff person said that they hope to remedy that soon. That's fine, but we experienced extremely cold weather in mid-November so it would have been great to eat indoors rather than trek around looking for a restaurant for dinner. Someone needs to get going on the refurbishments. Sharon Dardy
