The independently-owned Whitehall Hotel is Chicago's answer to the quirky boutique hotel, with a prestigious list of past guests that includes Katharine Hepburn and Mick Jagger. The Whitehall has been around since the 1920s, and maintains a combination of European-inspired charm and warm Midwestern hospitality, from the plush upholstered lounge-seating to the dark wood paneling and sparkling chandeliers. Feast on steamed dumplings and other Asian bites at Mei's Corner, or drink in the same seats that the Beatles once graced in the Whitehall Lounge. Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel (fees may apply) brings you back into the 21st century, though personal services like the overnight shoeshine retain that vintage feel.

Guests in the mood for a moonlit stroll can access Oak Street Beach, only steps away from the Whitehall's front door.

Not too bad.

The stay was nice. The staff was perfect. I do wish they had better access to electrical outlets in the room. Paid for wifi for 24 hours and did not get full 24 hours. Location really was nice.

Definitely well located to so many things. Short walk to dining, shopping on State and Michigan avenue. This is a nice hotel located just close enough to the heart of chicago without the noise!

Go to the bar at the top of the John Hancock. Great view -- without having to pay for observatory. Drinks were expensive, but the view made it well worth it.

Business trip to Chicago

Great location and staff. Would definitely stay again. Only negative was the fact that one of the two elevators was out of service. Options were a very long wait or 8 flights of stairs. At least I got some exercise on a long business trip.

A brief wonderful experience

Eight of us in our family stayed at the Whitehall for attendance at a family funeral in downtown Chicago. Everything about our very brief stay was excellent, including a delicious and well-served breakfast. The location could not have been more convenient and the neighborhood was extremely pleasant, with an old world feel to it. Highest recommendation. We lucked out!

Nice place

The Whitehall is a bit of an aging beauty, but has a great location and is a comfortable place to stay. A pet peeve, I hate it when a hotel dings you an extra $10 for wi-fi-- why nickel and dime guests in this way? For a couple of bucks, it leaves a bad feeling. There was some renovation going on, but they keep it under control. Great location.

Hate to let the cat out of the bag!

The Whitehall Hotel is a real gem. When location is everything, this place can't be beat - just a block from Water Tower shopping and 3 blocks from the red line. It's also just across the street from the Four Seasons Hotel but this place won't bust your pocketbook. The rooms are more than adequate with a relaxing vibe. It's surprisingly quiet being only a block from Michigan and I barely heard a peep from the hallway or neighboring rooms. And, what lady doesn't love a light up makeup mirror in the bathroom. Will stay here again and again and again! PS: doormen super friendly and always ready to assist.

Clean and Comfortable but not Fabulous

This was a nice hotel. Small and basic, and the hallways on higher floors could benefit from some fresh paint and carpet, but its clean, extremely well located, comfortable and the staff were all very helpful. It was perfect for what we wanted - just off Michigan Avenue, a good base, and everything we needed without the $$$s of some of the surrounding hotels.
