The hotel is situated one block from the Magnificent Mile and Rush Street nightlife district, but tucked away from the tourist fray on a residential street. One of Chicago's oldest luxury hotels but certainly no slouch, the Whitehall brims with 19th century elegance -- imagine chandeliers, wood paneling and tufted leather chairs, all restored to match the original European grace and grandeur of this Gold Coast gem.

Wonderful hotel, great price!

We got a great deal on this hotel. We were so pleased. All the staff were friendly and helpful (especially Nikki at the front desk). Rooms were standard size. Very comfortable and clean. Bed was so comfortable! No view but that's okay. Free coffee and flavored water in the lobby. Thin crust pizza in the restaurant was delicious! I was thrilled. Perfect location, great price.

Perfect place to stay while in Chicago!

I was immediately greeted by a friendly staff and was able to store my luggage before and after my stay, which was unbelievably helpful. My room was beautiful, and had a very large comfy bed and was very clean! I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Along with having an overall great facility, it is also in the perfect location being right off of Michigan Ave. You can't get any better with the John Hancock Observatory, Water Tower, and Magnificent Mile all right there! The Whitehall Hotel made my experience in Chicago a very enjoyable one!

Improv Family Getaway

We had no problems getting from Union Station to the Hotel. We were greeted with smiles and service immediately from the staff. After checking in, one of the staff helped us with our luggage. He was new there and was very informative as well as friendly. We were treated with the best of service in the Lobby as well as in the dining room. The room was clean and very comfortable. Beds were super!! We loved the fact that we were so close to everything you need. Only minutes walking distance to everything. Not far from the Red Line, which we used often, or the Bus. PERFECT!!! Thank you to all the staff for making our stay even better than we expected. You made our trip go so smoothly. We will return in the future. Thank you!

Location, location !!

Half a block from Michigan Ave and the John Hancock Building. Stayed in one of the nicer 21st floor rooms. Not much of a lobby, but the friendliness of the staff, the quality of the two restaurants annexed to the hotel, and the great location of the hotel makes for a fine venue in Chicago.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Forget about taxis. Get a 1 or 3 day pass for unlimited bus or train rides to all the city attractions. They run one after the other and are clean and safe....and inexpensive. Also, we found the City Pass to 5 major attractions worthwhile and we recommend it.

Visiting friends

Hotel was very clean. It is, however, old. Definitely needs updating in the rooms with new furniture and TVs. Room was very big & bed was very comfortable. The free coffee in the lobby was also nice. Very good location; convenient to everything.

Comfortable hotel in great location

The Whitehall is still undergoing remodeling and our room did not yet have the new furniture, flat screen TV and coffee maker that are part of the planned upgrade. However, the room was more than acceptable. The bed was very, very comfortable with great linens and the bathroom was very nice--all marble and tile. There were a couple of upholstered chairs and a desk with chair. Internet was an extra $9.95 a day, but worked well. The heat/AC system and thermostat worked well. Staff was very friendly. This is at the north end of the Magnificent Mile, so it's a great location for shoppers. It's just a few blocks to the Chicago Avenue Red Line station, so public transportation worked well for us. I would stay here again if a similar deal were available.
