Ok if you just need a place to sleep

The good: Easy check in and out, location right off the train, clean room, free wifi The bad: No in room safe, only toiletry provided is one bottle shampoo/conditioner and a bar of soap, not even a small bottle of lotion, no places to eat near by in the evening so expect a cab or a long walk. There are food choices but everything closes after the business lunch crowd is done for the day. The free breakfast was the typical cheap hotel food: waffle mix, cold cereal, nasty biscuits and gravy, bread and hot brown water calling it self coffee. Don't think I would stay again do to it's

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

If you are familiar with The Loop you know everything closes after the business crowd goes home for the day. Expect to walk or can it north, south or east of hotel to find some dinner options.

Lacking Sufficient Value

We stayed here for the Chicago marathon weekend. The special event explains the high cost, but the room was odd and lacked sufficient comfort for the price. The space was very tight: chest drawers would slide open on their own (possible the floor or furniture was uneven) and block walking space, plus drawers were 1/2 size of normal drawers in orders to fit in the room; closet was tiny; there was a large desk but hardly any room to turn around-- go figure. Bathroom was spacious though. Breakfast was mediocre and staff either too friendly and talkative or dismissive. We won't repeat this one, although we liked the convenience of the location.

Great location

Superb location in downtown Chicago, just one block away from Washington/Wells CTA-Loop station, two from Willis (ex-Sears) tower and two from the river. The turn off's that my specific room window (2nd floor) was facing a very busy alley during weekday mornings (translation: a lot of noise early), and because of the same reason I had no view at all (except from an office window across the alley). Not many breakfast options (and you have to wake up relatively early to have it on time). Other than that, good choice for the price.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

Maybe you already know this, but Portillo's (100 West Ontario Avenue, if my memory doesn't fail) a good choice for getting many of the typical Chicago dishes: Italian beef, Maxwell Street Polish and Chicago style hot dog (must go if you're not under a strict diet; if you are, you can burn the calories at the hotel's fitness room).

A so-so stay

The hotel service was nice and helpful, the room was just not in a good location (across from the elevators). The room was air conditioned, but still a bit too humid.

Money-saving tip: In Hotel

There is a continental breakfast on the second floor, with it there is also waffle makers, sausage patties and biscuits. For a budget, it's not a bad place to stay. If you're with your spouse, I'd spring for something a little better next time.

Staff and Breakfast are outstanding!

The staff were more than professional; they were friendly and inviting. Thanks! The breakfast was outstanding and the ladies charged with keeping up the supplies and cleanliness of the area did a superb job. There was a Keurig and refrig in the room was definitely a plus. But I had just changed hotels from another at a comparable price and by comparison the decor and bed was lacking.

Great downtown location.

Can't really beat the location. Just a block walk to the Loop (Washington & Wells station). That was a prime consideration for us. One of our party had never been to Chicago, so we appreciated the walkable distance to Grant and Millenium Parks, Art Institute, Michigan Ave., and trains. We were there primarily for a concert at Wrigley Field, and the red line station was just a few blocks walk. Positives include the aforementioned location, a clean room, helpful- enough staff (many of whom were very friendly and helpful when we needed directions or help getting around), very comfortable bed, nice, big, glass-walled shower, nice towels, and a really nice free breakfast. Negatives are, well, it's definitely not a luxury hotel. The king-bed room is smallish. The only toiletries are a bar of soap and a tiny bottle of shampoo (no brand I recognize). No lotion or fancy extras. Breakfast is generous and has a good selection: eggs, bacon or sausage, biscuits and gravy on weekends, oatmeal, cold cereal, yogurt, fruit, make-your-own waffles, juice, coffee, bagels, muffins, etc. But pay attention to the time. They serve until 9 on weekdays, and by 9:00 they've pretty much cleared it away--fast! It's very much a motel-like, serve-yourself arrangement with styrofoam plates and cups and plastic utensils. Not fancy, but a nice breakfast. That's a money-saver for those of us who would otherwise be eating out every morning. Speaking of eating out, bear in mind this is the downtown business district, not a good restaurant area. There are places to eat close by, but the best restaurants, especially for dinner are going to be outside of this area. Many of the casual restaurants close by don't stay open in the evening. But we had no problem walking several blocks or taking a train to other areas for eating out. I'd stay here again for the location and the breakfast, but kept having the feeling I was paying more luxury hotel prices and not getting much luxury. As long as you go well aware this is a La Quinta and not a fancy hotel, despite Chicago prices, you'll likely be satisfied with what you get.

The Walgreens a block away sells train passes. That can be a convenient way to bypass the bustle of trying to sort out options at the station.
