Plantation offers the grace of yesteryear for de-stressing today
A 30-acre historic property on Kauai's west coast, Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages is a step back in time. Lovingly restored vintage houses are outfitted with period furnishings in rattan, wicker and mahogany. Each cottage is uniquely decorated and offers its own charm. While a handful of cottages are oceanfront, most are set among the coconut palm and banyan trees, fronting graceful manicured lawns. A restaurant, pool and spa add contemporary comforts, but the draw here is a feeling of being transported to a simpler, quieter time.Highlights
- Overall ambiance of idyllic restfulness
- Authentic sense of Kauai history
- Spa with indoor and outdoor treatment areas
- A 4,000-square-foot, five-bedroom Managers House
Location
- Kauai's west coast, which serves as a gateway to Waimea Canyon, Koke'e State Park, and raft and kayak tours along the iconic Na Pali Coast
Rooms
Restored one- to five-bedroom vintage homes from Kauai's plantation era are clustered about the 30-acre Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages property. Period furnishings and architectural details evoke a bygone era and exude romance. For larger families or groups, top choice is the Managers House, a 4,000-square-foot, five-bedroom oceanfront home with AC in the master bedroom. The five-bedroom Kruse House, built circa 1920, was moved to this property in 2002. It is fully air-conditioned and each bedroom has a private bath.Features
Those looking for a place to relax and recharge in utterly peaceful surroundings will see this historic property as paradise. Plantation-era cottages set the tone, aided by inviting hammocks beneath the trees. Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages isn't the place for exuberant nightlife, though the on-site pub sometimes brings in local talent to complement its handcrafted brews. The antithesis of activity and action, there's a slow-down-and-breathe ethic here -- in the quiet, at the pool, at the full-service spa. While the black-sand beach is not for swimming, Kekaha Beach, five minutes away, has white sand and a lifeguard.Transportation

a special place
The Waimea Planation Cottages is not for the average vacationer. It's a very special place if you appreciate solitude, stunning natural landscapes and a truly "local" experience. If you want to be waited on, don't mind crowds and the consistency you find with "standard" resorts this is not the place for you. Borne essentially from a homestead, it's not plush by any means but it's genuinely authentic in a priceless way. Our 10, 8 and 6 yr olds abandoned all modern forms of entertainment to climb and frolic in the majestic tropical trees that were better than watching Avatar because they were living it. The hotel restaurant suffices and the walk into town is easy. Don't be shy about shooing away the local roosters at sunset so they don't wake you up in the middle of the night! We're definitely going back!

Old Hawaii Lives On
Beautiful, "Old Style" feel to this place. It's like stepping back in time to old Hawaii in the 1940's. Great atmosphere. When we arrived there was no record of us having made arrangements online with above travel website. However, the front desk staff was very accomodating. Rooms a little dirty. I think the cleaning staff needs to pay particular attention to the bathrooms! Overall, wonderful experience

Close to paradise
The other reviews mention the chickens - believe it. I thought they would start crowing at dawn, but they make noise all night long. In spite of this, I absolutely loved our stay. The grounds are exquisitely kept and beautiful, including vine swings, a lovely pool, and free DVD rental for guests. I went with my two daughters, and we had a blast. I would absolutely stay here again. Wish all the cottages had actual doors (some do) instead of screened doors like ours had. Lorna at the cottages was an absolute angel. Wish everybody in Kauai had been as sweet as she was.

Short drive from hotel
Captain Andy's Souther Seas Yachting excursion was phenomenal. It was pricey - $400 for the three of us - but it was completely worth it. We went on the snorkel Na Pali tour. We got breakfast and lunch, sailed with dolphins and swam with sea turtles. You leave from Port Allen, very close to Waimea Plantation Cottages.

Roosters ruin a rustic paradise
The cottages and grounds were wonderful, and the staff was warm and conscientious. The place has a very authentic, relaxed Hawaiian feeling. But the roosters start crowing at 4 am and don't let up until well past 8. It was so noisy that we had to shut all the windows and wear ear plugs in order to get any sleep. Kauai is gorgeous, and this location would have been great value for the money, but unless you are prepared for the noise, you'll be disappointed. Also be aware that the beach at the property is too dangerous for swimming, so you'll have to drive in order to get in the ocean.

Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages
A quiet, clean and relaxing place to come back to after a day around the island. Be warned: there are chickens and roosters everywhere on the island. Roosters crow. A lot.

Beach house in paradise
It's like staying at a friend's old beach house in paradise. Little private cottages right on the ocean, gorgeous sunsets, relaxed atmosphere, nice staff. Sure, the paint is peeling, the ceiling fan squeaks, and a rooster wakes you up before dawn. But who cares?! Start the day early and get out to the canyon or whatever you're doing that day. The restaurant is great, with a lovely verandah, excellent food and local musicians. It's the place to be in Waimea.

For lunch, eat at Island Tacos, then get shave ice at JoJo's. The fish tacos are excellent, and JoJos may be the best shave ice anywhere.

Best Location to avoid the crowd
This quiet resort on the west side of the island is the ideal spot to enjoy how Kauai used to be. The cottages are nice, simple and nostalgic. The grounds are well maintained. The beach is interesting but not for swimming and walking is an adventure due to all the driftwood. People made bonfires at night by the beach and you can grill out next to your cottage. The food at The Grove was just OK, but the location can't be beat. You will drive a bit to get there, but this place is worth the effort.

Make Kauai Your Home Away from Home
The cottage was quaint and very Hawaii. You feel as though you've gone back in time and our on the farm...in a good way. Footed bathtub made for a nice soak after a long day of hiking. Full kitchen was the best part as we cooked all our meals. Stopped at Costco from the airport and stocked up for our week stay. The beach is not ideal to swim in as it's murky and the westside is very far away from anything else. Not much to do. The location being the biggest downfall.
