Dining

Cafe On the Green
You don't have to be a hungry golfer to dine at the Makena Golf Course's Caf on the Green. Anybody can ride the free shuttle up to the golf course for a dining experience that combines stunning views with great food. Blue ocean vistas, emerald golf greens and casual al fresco dining on the trellised veranda are the hallmarks of this establishment. Hearty sandwiches, fresh garden salads, small plates, and an assortment of cocktails and beverages define the menu. Pau Hana happy hour specials on beer, mai tais, and a tempting array of appetizers are offered daily from 4 until 6 p.m. It's the best place to watch a glorious sunset on Maui!
Molokini Bar and Grille
This Maui landmark is known for serving Western comfort foods with culinary creativity. Paniolo favorites like South Maui barbeque ribs dripping in a homemade sauce, molasses glazed hanging tender, and rack of lamb with poha berry demi glace are served with a gourmet's flare. From the sea, fresh, fresh, fresh opakapaka and mahi mahi are sauted with a mango buerre blanc or perhaps, a lemongrass butter. Lighter fare like artisan pizza, an assortment of small plates, and the famous Molokini Bar & Grille Da Kine burger made with Smokehouse Farm cheddar and applewood bacon will "broke da mouth" (as we say in Hawaii.) Live music makes this a great place for drinks and small plates at the bar, or leisurely family dinners in the dining room. Chef McDowell recommends the ahi carpaccio as a starterserved with chunky ginger avocado, Kaffir lime parfait, and a South Pacific splash! Nice wine menu, too! Bon Appetit!
Cafe Kiowai
This delightful open-air dining area overlooks the koi fishpond and beautiful Japanese gardens with stunning waterfall and stream features. Every day is a wonderful day when you start with a hearty breakfast from the Caf Kiowai buffet or try something new from the a la carte menu. Fresh fruits and juices. Homemade banana bread. Made-to-order omelets and waffles. The array of items is intoxicating and changes seasonally. Light eater? Then order a continental breakfast buffet option, instead. Service here is fast, friendly, and designed to get you quickly on your way to golf, tennis, whale watching, or beach activities. Aloha Kakahiaka!
In Room Dining
Enjoy the luxury of breakfast in bed or the privacy of lunch or dinner service on your lanai (balcony). Or maybe you just want snacks and cold drinks while you watch your favorite sports game on your in-room flat screen TV.
Sunday Brunch
Voted "Best Brunch on Maui," Sunday Brunch at Makena Beach & Golf Resort is a feast fit for Ali'i or royalty. It's the best value for Sunday brunch on the island. Eggs Benedict and buttermilk pancakes, carving station with prime rib and whole roasted Kalua pig, made-to-order omelet station, an assortment of garden salads, fresh baked muffins, pastries, and desserts, sweet ripe melons, papayas and pineapples. You won't be disappointed!
Poolside Snack Bar
No shoes, no shirt? No problem! The Pool Snack Bar & Grill is just the place for barefoot and bikini-clad picnics by the pool or late afternoon cocktails and snacks. The Pool Bar & Grill is just perfect for oh-so-casual seaside dining. Heading to the beach? Grab a take-out lunch for a beachside soiree. The kid-friendly menu features grilled favorites and specialty pizzas fresh from the charcoal grill and brick pizza oven on site, as well as farm-fresh salads and tempting finger foods. Quench your thirst with a variety of frozen daiquiris, margaritas, and designer cocktails.
Barista 5400
Conveniently located at the north end of the Main Lobby, Barista 5400, We Proudly Brew Starbucks Coffee, is your quick stop to caffeine heaven. Barista 5400 is also popular for its homemade Spam Musubi, fresh baked breads and pastries, breakfast burritos, and homemade salads, wraps, and sandwiches all packaged to go for quick and easy self service. The espresso is brewed in a top-of-the-line Schaerer Espresso machine. Smoothies, too! Really fresh. Really good. Really fast!
Private Oceanside Dining
Could anything be more romantic than a private, catered seven-course gourmet dining experience overlooking the ocean for two? Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, or popping the question, a private Makena oceanside dining experience is an unforgettable way to make a lasting impression on your date. 48-hours advance notice required.

very courteous staff in a beautiful location.

We were treated very cordially by the entire staff. Throughout the day the staff provided little extras for us to enjoy. The grounds and garden were immaculate and expertly manicured. The continental breakfast was exquisite and all of the foods were prepared wonderfully. The setting in an open courtyard between the pool and the gardens was delightful. We would definite consider staying here again.

Relaxing, quiet getaway

Our stay at Makena was so peaceful. We practically had the place and the beach to ourselves. The breakfast buffet, itself, added extreme value to our vacation package. I would highly recommend this resort.

Best of Maui

We started coming here in the winter of 2001 when it was part of Prince. Tried a number of other Maui hotels over the years, but this is the best if you want to experience the real Maui. The atmosphere is serene and understated. Staff are helping and friendly. Beach is the best - and the boats for Molikini pull up right there. Make sure you get the breakfast package - and sit by the amazing koi ponds. The new owners have spruced things up, and added a 9 hole mini golf. Win.

MaKena Beach and Golf

Great Place. Hotel and Pool area not fancy compared to other resorts. Staff were very gracious. Rooms were very nice and good size and clean. Quieter and less busy than other resorts. Great Beach & Golf. The resort is a couple miles out of the heart of Wailea, but we knew that going in. Great Value compaired to every other place. No resort fee and we had a complimentary buffett breakfast every day. We booked the least expensive room and paid 210/night with an economy car through dollar.

Nice Place

We stayed a couple of nights at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort. We found the facilities to be great. It was probably the best place we have stayed on Maui. There were minor issues with getting the bags to the room quickly and some troublesome ants, but those did not significantly impact our stay. I gladly go back and would recommend it to others.

Relaxation Paradise

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Love Jay and Dan from the beach area. They remembered our names and where we were from. They went above and beyond to make us feel at home. This was one of my best vacations and the experience I had a Makena makes me want to keep coming back to Maui. Aloha!!!!

Downhill Maui Bike Adventure was fantastic. Our guides, Billy and Jesse, were hilarious! If you want to see the sites, the best way is coasting down a volcano on a bicycle. I totally recommend this excursion, definitely worth every penny!

Quiet Out of the Way ZHotel

This hotel has decent infrastructure but lacks the warmth to make full use of the facilities. The staff, with few exceptions, while generally competent, just doesn't rise to the level of treating customers as guests, much less "friends". That takes much from a resort. The pool is very small, but the sea is nearby, and relatively calmer then elsewhere. I had tiny ants running all over my work table, which was strange. AC didnt work because the balcony door wasnt set right, and nobody thought to let the guests know how to critically locate one side of the door (had to have it close over a sensor). Location of hotel is out of the way, which makes it exclusive, but adds 15 mins to the travel time to civilization. Not a terrible hotel, but not one I wld go back to when I return to Maui.

Kihei has some decent small restaurants (but not cheap). Search the web for recommendations (the usual site for restaurants) - decent recommendations, some of the better food even compared to Bay Area. Places like Cuatro, Izakaya Matsu comes to mind that I would like to return to.
