Great value for all!

The hotel had everything we needed for a reasonable price! Washer and dryer in our room proved to be very convenient and it was nice to have a full kitchen so that we could go grocery shopping and make some of our meals, especially for days that we were going snorkeling and wanted to bring food along. Rooms weren't the cleanest I've ever been in, but the important things were clean (sheets, bathroom/shower/sinks - all good). Carpet (especially underneath bed and couch) not so clean, but not a big deal. We did have small bugs that came into the room, especially around the kitchen sink and bathroom sink (moist areas), but that was a minor nuisance. Location was ok - about 6 miles north of Lahaina (not exactly as we thought it was advertised), which was fine except when we wanted to go into town for dinner and/or shopping. We did have a rental car, so problem solved. Overall, we LOVED it and would stay at the same place if we get a chance to go back!

Value oriented lodging meets my expectation

Given the rate charged, I'd say it met my expectation - it's in Hawaii, you are paying for what is worth! The property is along a small beach, and that is what is expected, as this is not a high-end 4 or 5-star hotel. They will easily charge you $300 -400/night. That means that you have to explore/search for decent beaches behind big hotels in order to get the Hawaii experience yourself. Overall i consider it fit my needs - value oriented, decent, clean lodging. Also, it provides full kitchen, so you can cook inside, and save some eating outside

Great location, nice place to stay

My 3rd time in Maui - always stay in the Kahana area. The Outrigger Royal Kahana was a good choice. Our "garden view" room actually had an ocean view - so that was a surprise. The room has a studio-kitchen and that was cool. On our first day we stocked up on sandwich-fixing and saved $$ on lunches. The property has BBQ grills, so we cooked our dinner a couple of times too, and ate on our balcony overlooking the pool and ocean. The beach here is smaller (narrow) but nice. A LOT of turtles swimming around. Not a lot of night-life in the area, but a couple of cool bars. I'd stay here again.

Secluded, wonderful beach

I loved seeing the surfers every day, and at the same time , being able to go out to the beach and seeing green sea turtles, grazing on the seaweed that was growing on the rocks. The water was warm and safe to swim in, with no undertow. I look forward to going back in the years ahead. The room unit was perfect, with a beautiful view of the ocean. This is whale season, and the whales can be seen aplenty from this location. I was dissapponted to go to another condominium for my last week, and there were no whales and green sea turtles. The difference made me realize what a special place the Outrigger is.

Excellent stay in a very convenient condo

I was on vacation on Maui with my girlfriend and we really enjoyed the Royal Kahana (we both are in early 30s). We traveled in February 2013 for 9 days and were in condo #903. If you plan on staying the whole time on the resort pool & beach, this may not be a good place for you though. But if you have a car and are planning exploring the island and its different beaches, like we did, this is definitely a really good base point. We didn't spend much of our day-time on the resort, there is plenty of nice beaches and things to do on Maui and everything is accessible on day trips from the hotel. Many nice beaches are only 5-10 minutes drive from the hotel. Upsides: - very convenient and fully equipped (all the amenities were available and the kitchen was very well equipped) - everything was clean and we had a mid-stay cleaning service (included in our package), which was quite sufficient for us, towels and sheets were changed then - we were welcome with a starter kit (coffee, soap for the washing machine, ...) which was nice after a long flight - bed was comfortable and everything was in perfect condition in the bathroom - staff was very helpful and nice - supermarkets and convenient stores are close (2 min walks for the general store) Downsides: - no beach on the resort, there is a pool and you can see the ocean (with whales and turtles), but you can't swim or lay on the beach there - hotel services were a little early for us (we're not early people...): cleaning service @ 9AM on 2 occasions, call from the tour-booking staff @ 8AM on our first morning, ... - we booked ocean view, but the view was actually more on the resort close-by. not a big deal, we could see the ocean and enjoyed the lanai, but we expected more a kind of wide-opened ocean view Our overall experience there was very positive and I would highly recommend this place. It's a very nice place to live/cook/sleep, but I wouldn't recommend it for people that want to spend 90% of their stay on the resort.

The Hula Grill, in Whalers Village, was very good. Expect a 1-hour wait if you go there for dinner, but food was very worth it.

great getaway

Hubby and wife vacay. Hotel staff was very nice. At the moment of check-in, we were automatically upgraded to an ocean front room at no extra charge! The view was awesome; whales, dolphins every morning and sea turtles in late afternoon. One aft there was about 15 of them. Hotel rooms themselves, do need a little updating; but in reality you are only there to shower, sleep and eat (sometimes). Did love the idea of having a fully stocked kitchen and washer/dryer in the room. We made breakfast every morning and was able to pack alot lighter having the laundry in room. They do supply laundry soap for one load, but we brought our own soap and dryer sheets. Be sure to rent a car, drive the whole island. Do the tour of The Road to Hana, (with the Mecerdes Benz van, less people and more comfy) well worth the long 11-12 hr day.

Not what I expected...

If *all* you expect is a clean room and clean/comfortable bed, then I'd rate this as perhaps 3 stars, nothing more than average. That said, the bathroom and kitchenette fixtures and counters were dated (but functioning and clean). There were cracks in some of the tub tile grout (again, clean), dated tub tile, cracks in some of the bathroom wallboard and paint. Main door deadbolt non-functioning. TV was not flat screen. The parking spaces were tight, and you'd receive a note on your window if you were on/over the line. Our suspicion is that the units are individually owned, as two other couples we spoke with said their fixtures were updated, but they still commented on how their rooms had a 1970's-feel (likely when it was originally built). Note that if you are in the south wing (our unit was north wing), there was a burned out building immediately to the south which had boarded-up windows. So your "ocean view" would include the burned/boarded-up adjactent property. Concierge was helpful, but no better deals than you could get on your own. The snorkle gear they rented leaked a little, but was adequate, little more. We weren't in Maui to enjoy our hotel (i.e., on-resort), but rather to enjoy Maui (i.e., off-resort). So while the negative feedback above didn't stop us from enjoying the island, it did nothing to enhance our stay and make it a truely special experience either.
